The Arizona State University swimming and diving program opens up Pac-10 competition this weekend, taking on the southern California schools. The Sun Devil men will take on No. 2 USC on Friday at 2:00 p.m. and Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The No. 19 Sun Devil ladies compete against No. 9 UCLA on Friday and No. 12 USC on Saturday.
The Polls

Five Swimmers' Times in NCAA Top Twenty
Through three meets in the swimming and diving season, five ASU swimmers have recorded times in the NCAA top twenty for the 2004-2005 campaign. Senior All-American Florencia Szigeti leads the way with three of her times being among the nation's best, including a third best of 49.45 in the 100 freestyle. Others in the national top twenty are junior All-American David Kolozar (9th, 200 fly, 1:48.68), freshman CJ Nuess (9th, 400 IM, 3:56.02), freshman Caitlin Andrew (13th, 100 fly, 55.85) and freshman Lucas Azevedo (20th, 1000 free, 9:20.75).
ASU vs. USC
The Sun Devils will face the Trojans after last seeing each other in dual competition on November 15 of last year in Tempe. The Sun Devil men upset the Trojans, 172.5-127.5, while the women came up just short with an 150-149 loss. The men are 3-9 against and the women are 2-10 against USC in their past 12 meetings.
ASU vs. UCLA
The ASU women last matched up in dual action with UCLA on November 15 of last year in Tempe where the Sun Devils fell to the Bruins 186-114. UCLA holds a 8-3-1 advantage in the last 12 matchups.
ASU, Last Time in the Pool
The Arizona State women were last in the pool on October 30th against Indiana in Bloomington, Ind. where they beat the Hoosiers, 156.5-142.5. Highlights for the Sun Devil ladies were two first-place finishes by Caitlin Andrew and Heidi Schmidt. Andrew touched the wall first in the 100 freestyle and 100 butterfly while Schmidt came out on top in the 100 and 200 breaststroke events. Andrew's 100 freestyle time of 51.21 was good for an NCAA provisional time. Other top finishes for the Sun Devil women were Sarah A Fischer (1,000 free), Sally Brown (200 IM) and Trisha Tumlinson (1-meter springboard). The Sun Devil men last swam on October 29th against Purdue in West Lafayette, Ind. where the men came up short, 153.5-146.5. Junior All-American Joona Puhakka and freshman Lucas Azevedo led the way for the men with two first-places finishes apiece. Puhakka was true to form claiming both the one-meter and three-meter springboard events while Azevedo took control of the distance events touching the wall first in the 500 and 1,000 freestyle events respectively. Other highlights for the men were first-place finishes by CJ Nuess (400 IM), David Kolozar (200 fly) and Richie Crowder (50 free).
Rookie Report
Both the men and women welcome six newcomers apiece to the squad this season and the Sun Devil rookies are already making a splash this season as three claim national top-twenty times. Lucas Azevedo has shown his dominance in the distance freestyle events, claiming the top place in each meet of the season. CJ Nuess took the title in the ASU pentathlon and continued to show his speed claiming first in the 400 IM against the Rebels and the Boilermakers. For the ladies, freshman Caitlin Andrew took home the title in the pentathlon and then continued her speed claiming first in the 100 butterfly against Purdue and Notre Dame and the 100 freestyle and 100 butterfly against Indiana. Sarah A Fischer has shown her dominance in the distance events where she has claimed top honors in each meet this season.
