BATON ROUGE, La. – Sun Devil Soccer took advantage of the limited opportunities they created to secure a 5-2 win at LSU on Sunday night at LSU Soccer Stadium.
Arizona State (2-0-2) was held to just six shots on goal in the game, but they scored on four while also picking up an own goal. LSU (1-1) finished the game with a 23-11 edge in total shots, with the home side putting 10 chances on target.
Trailing 1-0 as LSU scored on a corner kick in the third minute, the Sun Devils answered in the fourth minute when Cameron Valladares finished on a feed from Enasia Colon.
After the Tigers went back in front on a free kick in the 18th minute, Valladares again found herself in the action as her attempted cross took a deflection off an LSU defender and glanced under the keeper's legs to tie the game at 2-2 an open a stretch of four straight goals by the Sun Devils.
Valladares scored her second goal of the night – and third of the season – in the 53rd minute. Kierra Blundell played a ball through the defense for a streaking Valladares to run onto, and with a couple of touches, she finished past a charging keeper for the lead.
Colon added her name to the scoreline in the 58th minute after collecting the rebound of a shot from Valladares that hit the crossbar. After waiting for the ball to settle, Colon blasted it on goal for double the team's advantage.
Colon added her second goal of the night – and second brace of the season – in the 65th minute when she found herself on the finishing end of a solid build-up. The play started when Keri Matthews played a ball up the sideline for Valladares. After a couple of touches, she sent a cross through the box, where a wide-open Colon converted on an empty net.
Valladares totaled six points in the win, with Colon adding five. The duo combined for eight of the team's 11 total shots. ASU scored on its three shots on goal in the second half, which allowed them to overcome just 40 percent of possession and 12 LSU corner kicks.
Pauline Nelles finished with seven saves to earn her 21st career win in goal. She stopped the Tigers' final six shots on goal, including all four in the second half.
The Sun Devils now return home for three straight home games to close the non-conference schedule. That stretch begins on Thursday at 7 p.m. AZT with a visit from Grambling.
