TEMPE, Ariz. (www.TheSunDevils.com) -- Despite a career-high 21 kills from middle blocker Staci Smith and seven service aces from libero Sydney Donahue, the Arizona State Sun Devils lost a marathon five-game match to Oregon State Saturday night in Pac-10 volleyball action at Wells Fargo Arena. Game scores were 18-30, 30-27, 30-28, 19-30, 22-20 in favor of the Beavers.
The Sun Devils lost for only the second time in the last seven matches to even their season record at 6-6 overall and 1-1 in Pac-10 play. The Beavers evened their season record at 4-4 overall and 1-1 in Pac-10 play under first-year head coach Terry Liskevych.
Smith's 17 kills bettered her previous career high of 14 set last weekend against Tulane. She also tied a career high with three service aces and had one block. Freshman Margie Giordano notched her fifth double-double of the year with 16 kills and 17 digs. Senior setter Giovana Melo led all players with 56 assists.
The Beavers were led by 23 kills from Brittany Cahoon and a pair of 20-dig matches from Desma Stovall and Karah Rhoades.
The Sun Devils return to action next weekend at Washington (Sept. 30) and Washington State (Oct. 1).
