This Week The Arizona State Men's swimming and diving team will send eight swimmers and one diver to compete in the 23rd annual Dallas Morning News Swimming and Diving Classic hosted by Southern Methodist University at the Perkins Natatorium January, 14-15. CJ Nuess, Lucas Azevedo, David Kolozar, Jeff Barrett, Richie Crowder, Bobby Crowder, Pat Fleming, Emerson Ward and diver Joona Puhakka will represent the Sun Devils. The top-notch competition at the meet includes, SMU, California, Florida, Florida State and Texas A&M. Events on both Friday and Saturday begin at 7:30 p.m. CST.

Twelve Swimmers' Times in NCAA Top Twenty Through four meets for the men and six for the women in the swimming and diving season, 12 ASU swimmers have recorded times in the NCAA top twenty for the 2004-2005 campaign. Senior All-American Florencia Szigeti leads the way with three of her times being among the nation's best, including a tenth best of 49.45 in the 100 freestyle. She also claims top-fifteen times in both the 50 and 200 freestyle (15th, 50 free, 22.96, 15th, 200 free, 1:47.63). Freshman Caitlin Andrew climbed into the top-ten in the 100 butterfly, claiming the nation's seventh fastest time at 54.07. Others in the national top twenty are senior Jeff Barrett (11th, 200 free, 1:36.62, 18th, 100 free, 44.33), freshman Lucas Azevedo (12th, 1650 free, 15:20.26), freshman Sarah A Fischer (14th, 1650 free, 16:31.52), junior All-American David Kolozar (15th, 200 fly, 1:48.68), junior Leo Martins (16th, 200 breast, 2:00.06), junior Heidi Schmidt (17th, 100 breast, 1:02.82), sophomore Christine Creek (17th, 200 breast, 2:15.67), junior Laura Ullrich (17th, 100 fly, 54.87), senior Emerson Ward (17th, 100 breast, 55.00) and junior Joey Clements (18th, 200 breast, 2:00.66).
About The Dallas Morning News Classic The Dallas Morning News Classic annually invites the nation's top swimming and diving programs to compete and features only the fast races -- no long distances. Four of the teams in this year's men's field are ranked in the top-twenty, with two teams in the top-ten. The competition allows a nine-man squad (eight swimmers and one diver per team) from each of the six teams for the two evening sessions. There are no preliminary heats, only consolation and championship finals. The meet will feature two diving events, the one-meter competition (Jan. 17) and the three-meter competition (Jan. 18).
ASU, Last Time in the Pool The Arizona State University swimming and diving teams were last in the pool January 7-8, 2005 at the at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center where the men defeated Wyoming and UBC while the women upended Wyoming and Oregon State. The men were led in each dual by two wins from freshman Lucas Azevedo in the 500 and 1000 freestyle events. Other highlights for the men included David Kolozar claiming top honors in the 200 butterfly each day while CJ Nuess touched the wall first in the 200 IM against each school, respectively. Senior diver Thomas McCrummen swept the diving events against Wyoming, taking the 1-meter with a score of 320.10 and the 3-meter with a 332.03, both scores are season-bests for McCrummen. The women welcomed the return of senior All-American Agnes Kovacs who, in her first meet of the season following a shoulder injury, swam to convincing wins in the 100 and 200 breaststroke events. The women also saw two wins apiece from senior Florencia Szigeti and freshman Caitlin Andrew. Szigeti notched wins in the 100 and 200 freestyle against the Beavers and took home the 50 and 100 freestyle against the Cowgirls. Andrew touched the wall first in the 200 butterfly and 100 backstroke against Wyoming while swimming to first-place in the 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly against Oregon State.
Breaking Records Junior All-American Joona Puhakka set his fourth school-record in the 3-meter springboard event with a score of 398.32 against USC on November 20. Puhakka has set or broke a school-record in each of his three seasons as a Sun Devil.
Up Next For The Sun Devils The Sun Devil swimming and diving teams return to action January 21-22 as they take on Pac-10 foes Stanford and California at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center. Friday, January 21, the Sun Devils match up against the Cardinals with the men's team starting at noon while the women hit the pool at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 22, features ASU against California with events scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m.
