No. 5 Sun Devils Edge No. 7 Iowa State, New Mexico

TEMPE, Ariz.-- The fifth-ranked ASU wrestling team outlasted No. 7 Iowa State 19-16 Friday night at the University Activity Center.

Arizona State also defeated New Mexico 53-6, raising its record to 5-2 on the season.

Freshman Quinn Foster (Landover, Md.) pinned Luis Blanco at 2:08 in the 134-pound weight class, and senior Aaron Simpson (Wellton, Ariz.) posted a 12-3 major decision over Matt Mulvihill at 177 to pace the Sun Devils.

ASU trailed 7-0 after the 118- and 126-pound matches, but secured the next four matches to pull ahead 15-7.

Against New Mexico, the Sun Devils prevailed 53-6 as the Lobos forfeited at 118, 126, 134, 167, 190 and heavyweight. Brown, Suter and Simpson all recorded pins versus UNM, and Blackford posted a 16-1 technical fall over Jason Kurland.

ASU's Blackford and Simpson are a perfect 7-0 in dual action this year.

Iowa State defeated New Mexico 57-0 Friday afternoon.

The 1988 NCAA Champion Arizona State wrestling team, which was coached by current Iowa State mentor Bobby Douglas, was honored prior to the match with the Cyclones. The event marked Douglas' first match back in Tempe since leaving for the Iowa State job in 1992.

The Sun Devils are back in action on Sunday when they face No. 8 Oklahoma in Norman. Then they head to the National Duals in Iowa City, Iowa, on Jan. 17-18.
