ASU Beats Lehigh, Augsburg; Falls to Michigan St.

IOWA CITY, Iowa-- The fifth-ranked ASU wrestling team went 2-1 -- defeating Lehigh (22-15), falling to Michigan State (27-9) and then knocking off Augsburg (26-13) -- in the first three rounds of the Cliff Keen/NWCA National Duals on Saturday in Iowa City, Iowa.
The fifth seed, ASU overcame Lehigh 22-15 with six Sun Devils notching decisions. Second-ranked Aaron Simpson (Wellton, Ariz.) got past fourth-ranked John Van Doren 7-4 in the 177-pound weight class. At 150 pounds, ASU's fifth-ranked Steve Blackford (Des Moines, Iowa) edged No. 7 Chris Ayers 7-6.
Against the Spartans, ASU fell behind 13-0 after the first four matches until Blackford turned the tide at 150. He decisioned Cory Posey 10-4, but the Sun Devils could only manage two more victories -- Simpson at 177 and heavyweight Joe Micela (Audubon, N.J.).
Simpson posted a 25-8 technical fall and Jake Harman (Garden Grove, Calif.) recorded a pin to lead ASU past Augsburg 26-13. Seven Sun Devils notched wins.
ASU will meet up with West Virginia Saturday night at 9 p.m. MST. The winner advances to Sunday's 9 a.m. Consolation Semifinal Match against the loser of the Iowa-Penn State match. (The loser wrestles the loser of the Nebraska-Oklahoma match at noon on Sunday for seventh place.)
