ASU Volleyball Defeats University of Southern Florida
TEMPE, Ariz. -- Senior outside hitter Terri Cox had 19 kills as the Arizona State volleyball team defeated South Florida, 3-2, at the UCSB Judy Bellomo Classic in Santa Barbara, California this evening. Game scores were 12-15, 15-13, 8-15, 15-9, 15-10.
Cox led the Devils defensively with a match-high 24 digs. Senior middle blocker Kirstin Mattson had 14 kills, three block solos and three block assists. Junior middle blocker/right side hitter Shawna Vanley contributed with 10 kills, one block solo and four block assists. Sophomore setter Jolynn Faatulu dished out 58 assists and recorded 14 digs and four block assists on the evening.
ASU also received an outstanding defensive performance from Mindi Larsen-Moser who had 11 digs for the match. Middle blocker Laura Hibsman also contributed defensively with six block assists.
USF's Paula Araujo led all attackers with a match-high 30 kills while teammate Katiane Simonetti added 20 kills. Setter Sarah Runka had 59 assists and 16 digs for the Bulls.
ASU lost to 15th-ranked Loyola Marymount, 0-3, earlier today.
Arizona State (8-1, 0-0 Pac-10) will face Portland State tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. as action continues at the Judy Bellomo Classic.
