ASU Volleyball Wraps Up 1997 Season at Home

Sun Devils Host No. 25 UCLA, No. 7 USC

TEMPE--The Arizona State Sun Devils (13-14, 4-12 Pac-10) wrap up the 1997 season with two Pac-10 matchups at home. ASU takes on No. 25 UCLA on Friday, November 21 at 7 p.m. and No. 7 USC on Saturday, November 22 at 7 p.m., both in the University Activity Center.

PROBABLE LINEUP: Terri Cox (Sr./OH); Amanda Burbridge (Fr./OH); Jolynn Faatulu (So./S); Laura Hibsman (So./MB);Shawna Vanley (Jr./OP); Kirstin Matttson (Sr./MB). (Key Subs): Mindi Larsen (Jr./OH); Carmen Fusco (Fr./S); Ashley Ottman (So./MB).

THIS AND THAT The UCLA match has been designated as Boys and Girls Club Night. All members will be admitted free. The USC match is Senior Night. Seniors Kirstin Mattson and Terri Cox will be recognized for their contributions to the ASU volleyball program.

ABOUT UCLA The Bruins are 12-11 overall, 7-9 in conference action ... Kara Milling (5.77 kpg and 2.74 dpg) and Tanisha Larkin (3.57 kpg and 3.00 dpg) lead the UCLA attack ... UCLA is 3-2 in their last five matches ... They are coached by Andy Banachowski (31st season) ... ASU last win over UCLA came on November 10, 1995 in Tempe (3-0) ... the Bruins lead the all-time series with ASU, 37-5, and have won the last three meetings ... UCLA defeated ASU earlier this season in Los Angeles, 3-0 (15-13, 15-9, 16-14).

ABOUT USC The Trojans are 20-4 overall, 12-5 in Pac-10 play ... They are led by Jennifer Kessy (4.26 kpg and 3.28 dpg) and Jasmina Marinkovic (4.36 kpg and1.53 bpg) ... USC is 4-1 in its last five matches ... They are coached by Lisa Love (ninth season) ... The Trojans won earlier this season in Los Angeles, 3-0 (15-4, 15-3, 15-4) ... USC leads the all-time series with the Sun Devils, 30-10 ... ASU's last victory over the Trojans came on November 11, 1995 (3-2) in Tempe.

INJURY UPDATE Starting middle blocker Kirstin Mattson sprained her right ankle over the weekend versus Oregon State. The 6-1 senior is listed as questionable for this weekend's matches.

HEAD COACH SNYDER-PARK Sun Devils head coach Patti Snyder-Park enters her ninth season with the Arizona State volleyball program. She has guided the Devils to four NCAA tournament appearances in the past five years including a semifinal match appearance at the NCAA Mountain Regional in 1995. Snyder-Park has taken ASU to post-season competition in five of her last eight seasons and has posted a winning record in six of the last seven seasons. She has a career record of 148-112 at Arizona State.

COX DOES IT ALL Senior outside hitter Terri Cox looks to finish out her remarkable career with style. Cox has grabbed MVP honors in two tournaments this season (Sun Devil Challenge and Ladyjack Invit.) and was an all-tournament selection at the Judy Bellomo Classic as well. Once again, she is leading the squad in both kills (4.16 kpg) and digs (3.51 dpg). She has recorded a double-double in 18 of 25 matches played this season. Cox has become the seventh player in ASU history to record over 1,000 kills and digs in her career.

MATTSON IN THE MIDDLE Senior middle blocker Kirstin Mattson will captain the squad this season along with teammate Jen Lucero. Mattson was named to the all-tournament team at the Sun Devil Challenge in August. The 6-1 middle leads the team in block solos with 28 and block assists (105) in 1997. Mattson becomes the sixth Sun Devil to rack up over 100 solo blocks and 200 block assists during her career.

TALK ABOUT TOUGH The Sun Devils have faced a ranked opponent in 10 of its last 15 matches. ASU has played a ranked opponent in 11 of its 27 matches this season, including nine of 16 conference matches.
