Sun Devils Open Second Half Against No. 15 Arizona
The Arizona State volleyball team (12-8, 3-6 Pac-10) open the second half of conference action this weekend hosting the 15th-ranked Arizona Wildcats on Friday, October 24 at 7 p.m. in the University Activity Center.

LAST WEEK IN TEMPE: Arizona State split its matches with the Oregon schools, beating the Duck, 3-0 on Friday and falling to the Beavers, 1-3 on Saturday night. Senior Terri Cox recorded a match-high 11 kills and 10 digs on Friday and while teammate Kirstin Mattson contributed nine kills, 7 digs and four block assists ... Mattson recorded a triple-double in the loss to Oregon State, notching 14 kills, 11 digs and 10 blocks. Freshman outside hitter Amanda Burbridge added 17 kills, 10 digs, and three block assists.
ABOUT ARIZONA: The Wildcats are 14-3 overall, 6-3 in conference action ... Carolyn Penfield (3.48 kpg and 2.35 dpg) and Erin Aldrich (2.56 kpg, 1.15 bpg) ... Arizona has swept three straight Pac-10 opponents heading into this week's matchup (Cal, Oregon State, Oregon) ... The Cats rank 19th in the nation in team blocks, averaging 3.03 per game ... They are coached by Dave Rubio (sixth season) ... Rubio is five wins shy of 100 at U of A ... ASU leads the all-time series with the Wildcats, 32-21 ... Arizona defeated the Devils earlier this season with a 3-2 victory in Tucson (7-15, 9-15, 15-2, 16-14, 15-9) ... ASU is 3-2 in the last five meeting with U of A.

INJURY UPDATE: Starting setter Jolynn Faatulu went down in the third game of the Oregon State match on Saturday with an injury to her right ankle. The sophomore has suffered an avulsion fracture to the ankle and is scheduled to see an orthopaedic doctor this week. She is out indefinitely. Taking over setting duties will be freshman Carmen Fusco (San Clemente, Calif./Capo Valley Christian HS).
FOR THE RECORD: Senior Terri Cox should move into the top three in career digs at ASU by the end of the '97 season. She is currently ranked fourth all-time with 1,282 digs and needs 83 digs to move into the top two. The top spot held by Christy Nore (1985-88) who racked up 1,597 in her four-year career. Cox has also moved into the top 10 in career kills with 1,097 (7th). She becomes the seventh player in ASU history to record over 1,000 kills and digs in her career. Senior middle blocker Kirstin Mattson has moved into the top 10 all-time for block assists this year. She currently has 226 which ranks her 8th all-time. She also has 99 career block solos. With one more solo block Mattson will become the sixth Sun Devil to rack up over 100 solo blocks and 200 block assists during her career.

HEAD COACH SNYDER-PARK: Sun Devils head coach Patti Snyder-Park enters her ninth season with the Arizona State volleyball program. She has guided the Devils to four NCAA tournament appearances in the past five years including a semifinal match appearance at the NCAA Mountain Regional in 1995. Snyder-Park has taken ASU to post-season competition in five of her last eight seasons and has posted a winning record in six of the last seven seasons. She has a career record of 147-106 at Arizona State.
COX DOES IT ALL: Senior outside hitter Terri Cox looks to finish out her remarkable career with style. Cox has grabbed MVP honors in two tournaments this season (Sun Devil Challenge and Ladyjack Invit.) and was an all-tournament selection at the Judy Bellomo Classic as well. Once again, she is leading the squad in both kills (4.45 kpg) and digs (3.53 dpg). She has recorded a double-double in 14 of ASU's 20 matches this season. The 1996 first-team All-Pac-10 selection finished last season ranked second in the nation in digs averaging 4.90 per game and finished 11th in the country in kills with 5.07 per game.
MATTSON IN THE MIDDLE: Senior middle blocker Kirstin Mattson will captain the squad this season along with teammate Jen Lucero. Mattson was named to the all-tournament team at the Sun Devil Challenge in August. She led the team last year with 1.26 blocks per game and was second on the team in kills with 2.55 per game. The 6-1 middle leads the team in block solos with 23 and block assists (79) in 1997. She notched the first triple-double in '97 for ASU vs. Oregon State on Saturday (14 kills, 11 digs, 10 blocks).
TALK ABOUT TOUGH: The Sun Devils have faced a ranked opponent in six of its last 10 matches and face No. 15 Arizona this Friday. What's up next? Tenth-ranked Washington State and 21st-ranked Washington.
