Sun Devils Travel to Bay Area

The Arizona State volleyball team (10-6, 1-4 Pac-10), who picked up their first Pac-10 win of the season vs. Washington last weekend, travel to San Francisco to take on conference rival California on Friday, October 10 at 7:30 p.m. and fourth-ranked Stanford Saturday, October 11 at 7 p.m.

LAST WEEK IN TEMPE: Arizona State split its matches with the Washington schools, beating the Huskies, 3-2 on Friday and falling to the 6th-ranked Cougars, 1-3 on Saturday night. Senior Terri Cox recorded a match-high 27 kills and 26 digs on Friday and followed up with an 18 kills and 18 digs performance vs. WSU. Senior Kirstin Mattson had 14 kills, five service aces, one block solos and four block assists vs. UW on Friday.

ABOUT CALIFORNIA: The Bears are 6-8 overall, 1-4 in conference action ... They are led by senior Jessica Dinaberg (3.28 kpg, 2.72 dpg) ... Cal is on a three-game losing streak entering the matchup with ASU ... They are coached by Sue Woodstra (third season) ... ASU leads the all-time series with the Bears, 18-8 ... The Devils have won the last eight meetings with Cal dating back to the 1993 season ... California's last victory over ASU came on November 7, 1992 (3-1) in Tempe.

ABOUT STANFORD: The Cardinal are 14-2 overall, 5-0 in conference play heading into this weekend's matches ... They are led by senior outside hitter Kristin Folkl (4.92 kpg) and last year's Pac-10 Freshman of the Year, Kerri Walsh (3.05 kpg) ... Stanford is on a nine-game winning streak ... They are coached by Don Shaw (14th season) ... ASU's last win over the Cardinal came on October 22, 1993 in Tempe (3-0) ... Stanford holds a 30-3 advantage in the all-time series with the Devils.

FOR THE RECORD: Senior Terri Cox should move into the top three in career digs at ASU by the end of the '97 season. She is currently ranked fifth all-time with 1,233 digs and needs just 51 digs to move into the top three. The top spot held by Christy Nore (1985-88) who racked up 1,597 in her four-year career. Cox has also moved into the top 10 in career kills with 1,039. She becomes the seventh player in ASU history to record over 1,000 kills and digs in her career. Senior middle blocker Kirstin Mattson has moved into the top 10 all-time for block assists this year. She currently has 205 which ranks her 8th all-time.

HEAD COACH SNYDER-PARK: Sun Devils head coach Patti Snyder-Park enters her ninth season with the Arizona State volleyball program. She has guided the Devils to four NCAA tournament appearances in the past five years including a semifinal match appearance at the NCAA Mountain Regional in 1995. Snyder-Park has taken ASU to post-season competition in five of her last eight seasons and has posted a winning record in six of the last seven seasons. She has a career record of 145-104 at Arizona State.

COX DOES IT ALL: Senior outside hitter Terri Cox looks to finish out her remarkable career with style. Cox has grabbed MVP honors in two tournaments this season (Sun Devil Challenge and Ladyjack Invit.) and was an all-tournament selection at the Judy Bellomo Classic as well. Once again, she is leading the squad in both kills (4.59 kpg) and digs (3.59 dpg). She has had a double double in 11 of ASU's 16 matches this season. The 1996 first-team All-Pac-10 selection finished last season ranked second in the nation in digs averaging 4.90 per game and finished 11th in the country in kills with 5.07 per game.

MATTSON IN THE MIDDLE: Senior middle blocker Kirstin Mattson will captain the squad this season along with teammate Jen Lucero. Mattson was named to the all-touranment team at the Sun Devil Challenge in August. She led the team last year with 1.26 blocks per game and was second on the team in kills with 2.55 per game. The 6-1 middle leads the team in block solos with 19 and block assists (58) in 1997.

FAATULU ASSISTS DEVILS: Sophomore Jolynn Faatulu will run the court for ASU in 1997 after returning from ACL knee surgery which kept her our of action last season. Faatulu is a two-time all-tournament selection this season and is averaging 12.50 assists and 2.34 digs per game.

TALK ABOUT TOUGH: The Sun Devils will face nine teams ranked in the preseason top 25 (USA Today/AVCA) during 1997. Six of those are Pac-10 teams which ASU must face twice during the season.
