Women's Swimming Finishes Sixth at Pac-10 Championships

FEEDERAL WAY, Wash. - The Arizona State women's swimming and diving team finished sixth at the 1999 Pac-10 Women's Swimming and Diving Championships in Federal Way, Wash. With its sixth-place finish, ASU duplicated its finish from last year's Pac-10 Championships. ASU (634.5 points), finished behind UCLA (fifth, 856.5 points), Arizona (fourth, 1136.5 points), California (third, 1155.5 points), USC (second, 1177 points) and Stanford (first, 1533 points) and ahead of host school Washington (seventh, 456.5 points), Washington State (eighth, 372.5 points) and Oregon State (ninth, 225.9 points).

Freshman and former Olympian Riley Mants highlighted the final day of competition for the Sun Devils by finishing second in the 200 breaststroke (2:12.87).

Other top-10 finshers for the Devils included junior co-captain Casey Murphy, who finished sixth in the 1650 free with a time of 16:43.08, which is the ninth-fastest time in school history, and senior Camilla Johansson, who finished sixth in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:58.96, which is the second-fastest time in school history. Other competitors who scored for ASU in the third and final day of competition included sophomore Lauren Morelli, senior co-captain Tiffany Houser and junior all-America Carolyn Adel, who finished 11th (2:00.37), 21st (2:03.36) and 22nd (2:03.45) respectively, in the 200 back, junior Tennille Taylor, freshman Jennifer Lowe and sophomore Anne Rogalla, who finished 14th (2:22.01), 15th (2:22.84) and 16th (2:23.64), respectively, in the 200 breaststroke, and freshman Sarah Baham and junior Stephanie Elwonger, who finished 17th (2:01.61) and tied for 18th (2:04.55), respectively, in the 200 breaststroke.

In the diving portion, sophomore Patricia Malatesta finished fourth in the platform competition, while junior Mandy Contreras finished 10th. On the men's side, junior Allan Sonkin finished third in the platform competition.

The Sun Devil women's team doesn't compete again until the NCAA Championships, being held Mar. 18-20 in Athens, Ga. Next week (Mar. 4-6) ASU's men's squad heads to Long Beach, Calif., for the 1999 Pac-10 Men's Swimming Championships. The men's squad will be trying to improve on a sixth-place finish from last year's Pac-10 Championships.
