LONG BEACH, Calif.—With junior Rebecca Ejdervik pulling ASU ahead of Stanford in the second leg, the Arizona State women’s swim team finished in first place in the 200 yard medley relay Friday.
In addition to setting a new Arena Invitational meet record of 1.38.93, Ejdervik, junior Kelli Kyle, sophomore Caroline Kuczynski and senior Katie Haron beat a Stanford relay team that was composed of swimmers who had set the previous mark.
Eight races later, Ejdervik dominated the competition again. The junior broke the meet record for the 100 yard breaststroke which had been standing for seven years. Ejdervick clocked a time of 1:00.04, fractions of a second off the NCAA A-Cut time. Birte Steven of Oregon State set the previous meet record of 1:00.76 in 2003. Junior Jordyn Green also placed in the final, recording an NCAA B-Cut time of 1:01.72 to finish in sixth.
Once again, ASU swam strong in the relay with the women touching in second in the 800-yard freestyle relay. The ASU A relay, made up of Landgrebe, Kuczynski, freshman Tristen Baxter and Morrice recorded an NCAA B-Cut time of 7:14.28, almost 10 seconds faster than its next closest competitor.
In the 200 free finals, junior Cassie Morrice and sophomore Shannon Landgrebe finished three and four touching in at NCAA B-Cut times of 1:46.74 and 1:47.89, respectively.
Kuczyski also finished in first place in the consolation finals of the 100 fly posting an NCAA B-Cut time of 53.11. Kyle posted an NCAA-B Cut time of 54.82 in the 100 back finals finishing in 9th place overall.
On the men’s side, junior Jesper Atkesson finished 13th overall in the men’s 100 breast with a time of 56.80. The men’s 800 free relay was also successful finishing fifth overall in the finals. Junior Yutaro Yamashita, senior Nolan Ruane, freshman Malin Kenny and sophomore Caleb Veazy recorded a time of 6:47.79.
Both senior James Rigg and Yamashita scored points for the Sun Devils in 100 fly. Rigg touched in at 50.01 for 18th, while Yamashita finished at 50.82 for 24th.
The final day of the Arena Invitational hosted by UC San Diego concludes tomorrow at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool. The Sun Devil women are currently in fourth place with a score of 478.5, close behind San Diego State and California. The men sit in ninth place with a score of 230.5.
