Turning in its best day of the tournament so far, the Arizona State University women's golf team moved into ninth place after the third round of the 2005 NCAA Championships, being held May 17-20 at the par 71, 6,312-yard Meadows Course at the Sunriver Resort.
The Sun Devils shot a 13-over 297 on Thursday to move up one spot with a three-round total of 49-over 901. Duke surged into the tournament lead, moving from fifth to first after carding a six-under 278 on Thursday for a three-day total of 21-over 873. Auburn is in second place at 29-over 881, while UCLA (882), Pepperdine (885) and California (890) round out the top five heading into Friday's final round.
For the third day in a row, senior Erin Tone carded the best round of the day for the Sun Devils, turning in a one-over 72 on Thursday. She moved up five spots into a tie for 12th with a three-round total of seven-over 220 (75-73-72). Freshman Louise Stahle (75-77-74) and sophomore Tiffany Tavee (75-75-76) are both tied for 43rd at 13-over 226. Sophomore Charmaine Erasmus stands in a tie for 78th at 231 (80-76-75), while junior Alissa Kuczka is tied for 96th (78-79-77=234).
Duke's Anna Grzebien moved into the individual lead after carding a six-under 65 on Thursday. She has a three-round total of even-par 213 (73-75-65) and holds a four-stroke lead over Duke's Brittany Lang and UCLA's Charlotte Mayorkas, who are tied for second at 217.
The NCAA Championships conclude on Friday with ASU looking for its 17th all-time top 10 showing and its second in as many years. The Sun Devils will tee off at 1:30 p.m. on Friday and will play with Ohio State and USC in the final round.
