Women's Golf Moves Up to Eighth at NCAA Championships

AUBURN, Wash. - The Arizona State women's golf team moved up five spots to eighth place Wednesday after the second round of the NCAA Championships, being held May 21-24 at the par 72, 6,273-yard Washington National Golf Club.

The Sun Devils carded a four-over par 292 on Wednesday to move up to eighth from 13th with a two-day total of 17-over par 593 (301-292). ASU is just four strokes out of the top five and a total of 12 strokes out of the lead.

Arizona continues to lead the field with a two-day total of five-over par 581. Duke is second (587) followed by Georgia and Oklahoma which are tied for third at 588. Florida is in fifth place at 13-over 589.

Junior Blair O'Neal leads the Sun Devils individually, carding an even-par 72 for the second straight day. O'Neal is tied for 13th with a two-day total of 144 (72-72).

Junior Melanie Hunt had the best round of the day for the Sun Devils, carding a season-low two-under 70. Hunt moved from 94th to 41st with her season-best round for a two-day total of 149 (79-70). Junior Ga?lle Truet is also tied for 41st after shooting an even-par 72 on Wednesday (77-72=149), while sophomore Jimin Kang, a native of Edmonds, Wash., is tied for 57th at seven-over par 151 (73-78). Freshman Erin Tone carded a six-over 78 on Wednesday but was disqualified for signing an incorrect scorecard after a decision by the rules officials.

Duke's Virada Nirapathpongporn and Georgia's Summer Sirmons are tied for the individual lead with two-day totals of seven-under 137.

The Sun Devils tee off at 1:10 p.m. from the No. 1 tee on Thursday afternoon, while tee times for Friday's final rounds will be determined by results. Live, hole-by-hole scoring for the 2002 NCAA Championships is available at www.golfstat.com.

Arizona State is making its 11th consecutive NCAA Championships appearance, the third-longest active streak in the country, while the six-time NCAA champion Sun Devils are looking for their 16th top 10 finish in 21 NCAA appearances.
