Sun Devils Succumb to No. 9 Stanford

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Four Cardinal players reached double-digits in points to lead ninth-ranked Stanford (11-5, 8-1 Pac-10) to an 81-54 victory over Arizona State (7-10, 3-5) Thursday night at the University Activity Center.

Leaf Newman led ASU with 13 points.

Junior forward Olympia Scott led the scoring with 17 points, followed by junior guard Regan Freuen, who had 14 points (on 5-of-7 shooting) for Stanford. Rounding out the scoring for Stanford were senior forward Vanessa Nygaard with 12 points, and junior forward Kristin Folkl, who had 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Freshman guard Leaf Newman led the Sun Devils in scoring with 13 points, and junior guard Michelle Tom had 10 points (on 4-of-8 shooting) for ASU.

The Sun Devils battled hard early in the game and stayed within five for the first 15 minutes. The game was also tied five times during that time span.

Stanford then went on a 9-0 scoring spree and captured a lead that it never surrendered. The Cardinal went into the break with a 35-23 advantage.

Stanford came out strong in the second half going on 10-0, 8-0 and 6-0 runs to bring its lead to 58-34 with 10:47 to go. The Sun Devils answered with an 8-0 run, but couldn't hold on and lost 81-54.

ASU had 21 turnovers compared to Stanford's 17. The Cardinal outrebounded the Sun Devils 40-30, and shot 57.1 percent compared to ASU's 29.8 percent. Stanford also had seven blocks and 12 steals, while ASU had no blocks and seven steals.

The Sun Devils are back in action Saturday, January 31, 1998, when they take on California at 7 p.m. in the University Activity Center.
