TEMPE - Twenty-five members of the Arizona State University track and field team have been recognized with selections to one of three Academic All-Pac-10 teams, the Pac-10 Conference announced Tuesday. In all, five men and three women each earned a spot on the first team with four total garnering second-team accolades and 13 more being selected honorable mention. To be selected for Academic All-Pac-10 honors, a student-athlete must carry a 3.0 or better grade point average, have completed at least one full academic year at their institution and be a starter or significant contributor to the team during the academic year.
For the men, Ben Engelhardt earned first-team honors for the fourth year in a row and the seventh time in his career as the senior also has been selected Academic All-Pac-10 First Team honors in cross country three times and second-team honors once. Also earning first-team honors for the men were John Kline and Jamie Sandys, both of whom earned first-team honors last year, and both Roger Dolan and Steven Schnieders, who earned the first honors of their careers. The three women that were selected to the first team included Cj Navarro, Natasa Vulic and Linda Kuenzi. Navarro, a second-team honoree in 2009, joined Vulic as repeat first-team honorees after being selected to that honor last year while Kuenzi earned her first career accolade.
Three men and one woman were selected to the second team, including Samantha Henderson, who late last week was selected to the Capital One Academic All-District VIII Second Team. She is joined on the Pac-10 second team by Dylan Austin, Doug Smith and Josh Walker. All four Sun Devils earned their first career honors from the Pac-10.
Seven men and six women were selected to the honorable mention team, including men's student-athletes Nathan Estes, Nick Happe, Cameron Liston, Daniel Lovell, Jeremy Marcinko, Marc Peck and Michael Rodriguez while the women's honorees include Alyssa Allison, Christabel Nettey, Anna Jelmini, Ashley Lampley, Dominique' Maloy and Kauren Tarver.
Four of the women honored today are set to compete at the NCAA Championship Finals in Des Moines, Iowa, Wednesday through Saturday. Those four women include Henderson, Jelmini, Navarro and Nettey. They will be joined by nine other Sun Devils at the Championships this week.
