In May, 1998, Stanford University will host the nation's finest track and field athletes as they compete in the 1998 Pac-10 Championships. The tradition of excellence in the Pac-10 is no secret. The Pac-10 produced 50 track and field Olympians at the Atlanta Games.
Saturday and Sunday, May 23-24, is Championship Weekend. Don't be surprised to see former Olympians Bob Mathias, Lennox Miller, Hal and Pat Connolly, Regina Jacobs, and others on the Stanford campus. Watch Olympians of today and tomorrow compete at nationally acclaimed Cobb Track and Angell Field. The heptathlon and decathlon will be contested on May 16-17. Seating is general admission.

The Wildcats men's team features Patrick Nduwimana (freshman from Burundi) who is #1 in the 800 meters in the Pac-10 ... Jeremy Lyon is another top distance runner in the 3,000 meter steeplechase ... Abdi Abdirahman is fourth in the conference in the 10,000 meters ... Dominic Johnson (who placed sixth in the decathlon at last year's NCAA's) has leaped 18-6 1/2, second-best in the conference ... The conference leader in the shot put is Chima Ugwu (from Nigeria) ... The #1 discus thrower in the Pac-10 is Doug Reynolds, while the #1 javelin thrower in the league is Esko Mikkola, a freshman from Finland ... And the #1 decathlete in the Pac-10 is Dominic Johnson ... The #1 400 women's 400 meter runner is Carolyn Jackson ... One of the nation's top distance runners is Amy Skieresz, who is #1 in the Pac-10 in the 3,000, 5,000 and 10,000 meters ... Last year, Akieresz became the first woman in NCAA Division I history to win four individual national championships, winning the cross country title, the indoor 5,000 meters, the outdoor 5,000 meters and the 10,000 meters ... Anthony Hazard is one of the Pac-10's top long jumpers, rated third-best ... The top hammer thrower in the Pac-10 is Mika Laiho ... ASU's women's sprinters are strong ... Dawnyell Linder leads all conference runners in the 100 meters, and fourth in the 200 meters ... Joronda White is #2 in the Pac-10 in the 400 meters ... Fiona Daly is the Pac-10's top high jumper, while Charity Amama is #2 in the javelin.
California
The Golden Bears feature one of Pac-10's top 1,600 meter relay teams ... Travis Nutter, an All-American in 1997, is fourth in the Pac-10 in the hammer, whlie Pat Leonard is ranked fourth in the decathlon ... The Riedy sisters are talented distance runners ... Elissa Riedy is third in the Pac-10 in the 800 meters and fourth in the 1,500 meters ... Elissa finished second at the Pac-10's last year in the 1,500 meters ... Lori Riedy is among the conference leaders in the 3,000 meters.
Oregon
A traditional power in track & field ... Another strong team in 1998 ... Micah Davis (an All-American in 1997) leads the Pac-10 in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, while Konrad Knutsen is ranked third ... Will Driessen is among the Pac-10 leaders in the 400-meter hurdles ... Look for Damian Olson to be among the top contenders in the high jump, while Piotr Buciarski is ranked third in the pole vault ... Buciarski, from Poland, is the Pac-10 defending champion pole vault champion ... The Pac-10's top long jumper is Jody Mortimore, while Buciarski is ranked fourth ... The triple jump finds Gregg Bleakney (NCAA All-American in 1997) #1 in the Pac-10 ... In the 5,000 meters, four of Pac-10's top seven runners are from Stanford, including Brad Hauser who is second and Brent who is third ... Brad and Brent finished 2-3 in the 5,000 meters at last year's Pac-10 meet ... In the 800 meters, Mark Hassell is third, while Michael Stember is ranked third in the 1,500 meters ... In the hammer, Adam Connolly is ranked third ... In the women's 3,000 meters, three of the Pac-10's top seven runners are from Stanford, including Julia Stamps, who is ranked third and Monal Chokshi who is ranked fourth ... One of the nation's top distance runners is Meb Kelfezighi (the greatest distance runner in UCLA history), who is ranked #1 in the Pac-10 in the 5,000 meters ... Kelfezighi is ranked #2 in the 10,000 meters ... Keflezighi captured the 1997 NCAA cross country title, and at the NCAA Outdoor's in 1997, he won the 5,000 and 10,000 meter titles ... At the NCAA's Indoors in 1997, he won the 5,000 meters ... Brian Fell, the 1997 Pac-10 champion, is the top 400-meter hurdler in the Pac-10 ... The defending Pac-10 men's champion ... A wealth of talented athletes including a truck load of sprinters ... Four of the top six 100 meter sprinters from the Pac-10 are from USC ... Marques Hollwell and Charles Lee are #2 in the Pac-10 in the 100 meters with season-best times of 10.39 ... Tony Serpas and Djeke Mambo are ranked fifth with times of 10.60 ... Mambo, from Belgium, accounted for 18 points at the Pac-10's, winning the triple jump and finishing second in the long jump ... In the 200 meters, Lee has the Pac-10's second-best time of 20.90 ... Jerome Davis is the two-time defending Pac-10 champion in the 400 meters and he has the Pac-10's best time this year at 45.35 ... He has also run a 20.98 in the 200 meters, fourth-best in the conference ... Davis scored 23 points to lead the Trojans to the 1997 Pac-10 title (first in the 400 meters, second in the 200 meters and anchored both winning relays) ... The hurdle events are also strong events for the Trojans ... William Erese (from Nigeria) is #1 in the Pac-10 in the 110-meter hurdles at 13.71, while Djeke Mambo is third at 14.12 ... In the 400 meter hurdles, Felix Sanchez is second in the conference at 51.30 ... USC's 400 meter relay team is #1 in the Pac-10 at 39.79, and #1 in the 1,600 meter relay ... Mambo is also one of the league's triple jumpers ... Bengt Johasson (from Sweden) is the defending NCAA champion in the hammer ... Freshman Daniel Haag is second in the Pac-10 in the decathlon ... USC's women's team finished second at the Pac-10's last year ... Torri Edwards is second in the Pac-10 in the 100 meters, and #1 in the 200 meters ... Natasha Danvers (from London, England) is third in the Pac-10 in the 400 meters, and #1 in the 400 meter hurdles and #2 in the 100-meter hurdles ... Danvers is #4 in the Pac-10 in the high jump ... Ja'Warren Hooker is ranked #1 in the Pac-10 in the 100 and 200 meters ... Hooker, a freshman, is undefeated in eleven sprint races this spring, including seven straight 100-meter victories ... Derek Prior is #2 in the conference in the 400 meters, while Hooker is ranked third ... Chris Ledford is ranked fourth in the Pac-10 in the 1,500 meters ... Christian Belz is ranked second in the Pac-10 in the 3,000 meter steeplechase ... Dan Johnston is ranked in the top four in the 400-meter hurdles ... Ben Lindsey is ranked third in the Pac-10 i the discus ... The 10,000 meters for women is a strong event for the Huskies as Anna Oki and Deeja Youngquist are ranked 2-3 in the Pac-10 ...
