As the first day of the 2006 Texas Invitational came to a close, Arizona State University men's and women's swimmers showcased improvements in the events' final rounds from the earlier preliminaries, again highlighted by the achievement of several NCAA qualifying or consideration times.
At the end of day one of the 2006 Texas Invitational, both ASU's men's (87 points) and women's (88 points) teams are in sixth place in the overall standings.
After earning an automatic NCAA berth in the 100 fly after her performance in the preliminary round of the 100 fly, junior Caitlin Andrew improved upon her preliminary time with yet another NCAA automatic qualifying time and finished fourth in the final round of the event, touching in 53.48.
Sophomore Jen Beckberger improved upon her NCAA `B' qualifying time in the 50 free, again earning a similar consideration standard with an improved time of 23.12.
ASU women achieved NCAA `B' qualifying standards with two of its relays, beginning with the 200 free relay, swam by Andrew, Beckberger, freshman Jess Perazzo and senior Abra Armour, as the team finished in 1:32.47. In the women's final event of the evening, the team of senior Carissa Abe, freshman Sara McDaniel, Andrew and Beckberger earned a `B' cut in the 400 medley relay (3:42.08).
Junior Lucas Azevedo improved upon his `B' cut preliminary time in the 500 free, finishing fourth in the event's final, touching in 4:21.39. Junior CJ Nuess added his name to the list of those to earn an NCAA `B' qualification, doing so in the 500 free as well.
Sophomore Sean Boyle and junior John Dwelley also improved their times from earlier in the day, earning consideration times in the 100 fly.
Sophomore Gal Nevo also achieved an NCAA consideration time in the 500 free, as did the 400 medley relay teams of freshmen Ante Cvitkovic and Will Weeks, Boyle and sophomore Magnus Kjellberg, as well as the quartet of freshman Max Laney, sophomore Brandon Pierson and freshman Marin Naranca.
For the women, freshman Ashley Evans in the 400 IM and the 400 medley relay consisting entierly of freshmen, including Mirela Kardasevic, Evans, Ashton Aubry and Perazzo, all achieved national consideration times.
The Sun Devil men and women continue action Friday morning with day two preliminaries, then the finals round is Friday evening. The Texas Invitational will conclude Saturday night.
