LONG BEACH, Calif.—Highlighted by Cassie Morrice’s second-place finish in the 500 free finals, the Arizona State swim team capped off a successful first day at the 2010 Arena Invitational hosted by UC San Diego. ASU is currently in fifth place with a combined score of 256. Stanford leads the entire field with a score of 1076.5.
Morrice finished just fractions of a second off Stanford’s Andie Taylor, touching in at 4:41.81 for an NCAA B-Cut time. Close behind Morrice was teammate Tristan Baxter who clocked in at 4:44.95.
The ASU A relay of junior Kelli Kyle, junior Rebecca Ejdervik, sophomore Caroline Kuczynski and sophomore. Shannon Landgrebe finished in third place with a NCAA B-Cut time of 3:36.89 breaking the existing record of 3:38.06 set by Stanford in 2009. Stanford, with three of the four original relay members, set a new record time of 3:34.92.
Junior Penelope Yamauchi won the consolation round of the 200 IM with a time of 2:01.21, an NCAA B-Cut time. Also placing in the consolation round was senior Katie Haron. Haron finished 13th over all with a time of 23.51.
On the men’s side, Herbie Behn finished 20th in the men’s 50 free with a time of 20.98, while Caleb Veazy touched in at 4:33.30 in the 500 free to finish in 18th.
The Arena Invitational continues tomorrow at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool.
