This Week
This week, the Arizona State swimming and diving teams (No. 15 men, No. 20 women) make the trip to Northern California to take on Stanford (No. 2 men, No. 4 women) and California (No. 4 men, No. 8 women). On Friday, January 23, the men's meet at Stanford begins at 12 p.m. PDT while the women's meet starts at 2 p.m. PDT. The meet at Cal will be held on Saturday, January 24 at 1 p.m. PDT for both teams.
The Polls
In the fifth poll released by the CSCAA for the 2003-04 season, the ASU men are ranked 15th while the women are ranked 20th. For the complete poll, visit www.cscaa.org. The next poll is to be released on January 29.
ASU vs. Stanford
The Sun Devil men travel to Stanford having last beat the Cardinal in the 1990-91 season by a score of 124-119. Last season's result in Tempe went to No. 1 Stanford 156-119. ASU's women don't have a win in the series against the Cardinal in that same time period. Last year's matchup went to No. 4 Stanford 159-141 as they edged out the Sun Devils in a meet that went down to the last event.
ASU vs. California
The Sun Devil men have not beaten the Golden Bears since the 1990-91 season and Cal holds an overall advantage of 20-4 in the series. Last year, ASU fell 178.5-121.5 in Tempe. ASU's women are 10-11-1 in the overall series but haven't been victorious in the matchup since the 1996-97 campaign, when they won their fourth straight over the Bears. Last year's score was 166-131 in favor of Cal.
Sun Devils In National Top-10
Several Arizona State swimmers rank in the top-10 nationally in their respective events according to the latest Taper & Shave College Quick 50. For the men, senior All-American Ahmed Hussein is ninth in the 100 backstroke (48.09) and tied for ninth in the 200 backstroke (1:45.32). Sophomore All-American David Kolozar is tenth in the NCAA in the 200 butterfly (1:46.74). For the women, junior All-American ?gnes Kov?cs is fourth nationally in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.94), second in the 200 breaststroke (2:11.12) and fifth in the 200 individual medley (1:59.64).
ASU, Last Time In The Pool
The men's team was victorious over the visiting Purdue Boilermakers 180-120 in a dual meet on January 10 at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center. The triumphant afternoon for the Sun Devil men was spearheaded by David Kolozar. The Hungarian recorded victories in the 100 butterfly (55.95), the 200 butterfly (1:59.13) and the 800 freestyle (8:20.58). Several men recorded two individual wins during the meet for ASU including senior All-American Nick Brunelli (100 freestyle & 200 freestyle), senior All-American Ahmed Hussein (100 backstroke & 200 backstroke) and sophomore All-American Joona Puhakka (1m diving & 3m diving). The women's team fell to the No. 3 Florida Gators 164-127 in a coinciding meet on January 10 at Mona Plummer. Junior All-American Florencia Szigeti (100 freestyle) freshman Christine Creek (200 breastroke) and junior All-American Trisha Tumlinson (1m diving) each had victories for the Sun Devils. Both meets were conducted in short course meters.

Arizona State's swimming and diving teams next see competition on Saturday, February 14 at 1 p.m. when they host Arizona for their annual matchup with their intrastate rival. The meet is the Sun Devils' final tuneup before the postseason.
