This Week
Arizona State's swimming and diving teams bring their undefeated dual records on a difficult Bay Area road trip where they'll face-off against California and Stanford, January 25 and 26. Friday's meet pits the No. 5 ASU men (5-0) vs. No. 7 California (3-1), and the No. 7 ASU women (5-0) vs. No. 6 Cal (3-1). Both meets will run simultaneously beginning at 1:00 p.m. PST at Spieker Aquatics Complex. Saturday, the ASU women face No. 1 Stanford (3-0) at noon at Avery Aquatic Center, followed by the Sun Devil men vs. No. 1 Stanford (4-0) at 2:00 p.m. PST. Both ASU squads are 5-0. The last time either team won six consecutive dual meets in a single season was in 1991-92. Stanford hosts the University of Arizona's swimming and diving teams Friday, prior to ASU's arrival.

The Polls
The College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) releases national rankings on a bi-weekly basis. After both Sun Devil teams debuted at No. 13 in the polls (Nov. 1), in the most recent Jan. 17 rankings the ASU men are fifth for the second straight poll, with the women holding a season-best No. 7 ranking. A complete list of those current rankings appears on Page 2 of this release. The next poll will be released January 31. For more information, access www.cscaa.org.

ASU vs. California
The Sun Devil men have been swept in dual action by California and Stanford each of the last nine seasons and haven't defeated either team since they defeated both in the 1990-91 season. That year, the ASU men triumphed over Cal by the score of 154.4-88.5 in Tempe. The Sun Devil women have faired only slightly better. Their last win over the Golden Bears was in the 1996-97 season, when they won their fourth-straight meeting with Cal by the score of 175-125. Thus, their last win in Berkeley was in the 1993-94 season (the ASU/Cal women did not meet in 1995-96, 1994-95 was in Tempe).

ASU vs. Stanford
The Sun Devil men have been swept in dual action by Stanford and California each of the last nine seasons and haven't defeated either team since they defeated both in the 1990-91 season. That year, the ASU men triumphed over Stanford by the score of 124-119 in Tempe. Although complete records are not available, that dual win is the only victory for the ASU men over Stanford dating back to the 1989-90 season. In that same span, the Sun Devil women have gone 0-10 in dual action vs. the Cardinal.

ASU, Last Time In The Pool
With the women competing in the non-scored Sun Devil Invitational, the ASU men knocked off then-12th-ranked Michigan (now 11th), 132-111 at Mona Plummer Aquatic Center. ASU swept at least the top-three spots in three events. One of them was the 50 free, where junior-transfer Bobby Zaabadich led Mark Hill (20.80), Justin Mathias (20.86) and Wiley Wallace (21.16) to a Sun Devil sweep of the top four spots in 20.48. The previous day, ASU's swimming squads picked up exhibition wins against the University of British Columbia. ?gnes Kov?cs swam her slowest time of the year in the 200 breast (2:03.80), but still beat the nearest finisher by nearly seven seconds. Kov?cs also picked up a win in the 100 breast (1:02.50), finishing one-two with Riley Mants (1:05.98). Sarah Baham won the 50 free (24.35) and 100 fly (56.01).

Up Next For The Sun Devils
The competition doesn't get any easier when the Sun Devil swimming and diving squads head to the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center in Tucson to face-off against Arizona and Texas, February 1 and 2. Friday's meet is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m MST, with Saturday's contest getting underway at 9:00 a.m. The ASU women will then host Northern Arizona at Mona Plummer Aquatic Center in Tempe, Sunday at noon.
