The Arizona State swimming and diving teams (No. 13 men, No. 16 women) play host to the No. 3 Florida Gators women's team and the Purdue Boilermakers men's team. The women's squads will face off on both Friday and Saturday at 1:00 p.m. while the men's squads face off on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
The Polls
In the fourth poll released by the CSCAA for the 2003-04 season, the ASU men are ranked 13th while the women are ranked 16th. This is a reverse from the previous poll, when the men were 16th and the women were 13th. For the complete poll, visit www.cscaa.org. The next poll is to be released on January 15.
ASU vs. Florida, Women
The Sun Devil women have faced the Gators twice before in dual meet competition. On November 15, 1996, Florida defeated ASU 138-102 in Los Angeles while in the return matchup the next year in Tempe, the Sun Devils prevailed 182-117 on November 14, 1997.
ASU vs. Purdue, Men
Records indicate that this year's meet is the first dual meet matchup between the men's teams of Arizona State and Purdue.
Sun Devils In National Top-10
Several Arizona State swimmers rank in the top-10 nationally in their respective events according to the latest Taper & Shave College Quick 50 released in early December. For the men, senior All-American Ahmed Hussein is ninth in the 100 backstroke (48.09) and tied for seventh in the 200 backstroke (1:45.32). Sophomore All-American David Kolozar is tenth in the NCAA in the 200 butterfly (1:47.45). For the women, junior All-American ?gnes Kov?cs is third nationally in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.94), second in the 200 breaststroke (2:11.12) and fifth in the 200 individual medley (1:59.64).
ASU, Last Time In The Pool
The Arizona State swimming and diving teams fell to Washington in a dual meet at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center on January 3. The Huskies prevailed 126-123 on the men's side and 129-120 on the women's side. Sophomore All-American David Kolozar won two events for the Sun Devil men while junior All-American Florencia Szigeti captured two wins for the women. Kolozar touched the wall first in both the 1000 freestyle (9:34.52) and the 500 freestyle (4:38.42) to lead the men. Senior All-American Nick Brunelli recorded the other ASU men's victory on the day with a time of 45.63 in the 100 freestyle. Szigeti touched the wall first in both the 100 freestyle (52.18) and the 200 freestyle (1:52.18). She is undefeated in the 200 this season and has won the 100 in four out of five meets.
Up Next For The Sun Devils
A Sun Devil diver is next to see competition when Trisha Tumlinson participates in the 2004 World Cup Trials January 15-18, in Huntersville, N.C. The trials are a competition to select the USA Diving Team that will compete at the 14th FINA Diving World Cup taking place in Athens, Greece, from February 18-22. Tumlinson is slated to compete on the platform in Huntersville. The entire swimming and diving squads are in action the weekend of January 23-24, when they travel to Stanford on Friday and California on Saturday. The meets in Stanford begin at 12 and 2 p.m. while the meet in Berkeley begins at 12 p.m.
