AUSTIN, Texas -- Individuals from Arizona State's 12th-ranked men's and 16th-ranked women's swimming teams competed in day-one of the three day Texas Invitational at the Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin, Texas Friday.
Junior All-American Bo West was the leading individual scorer for the men, placing 14th in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:34.87. West also swam the opening leg of the 200 free relay, as the Sun Devils took ninth-place by winning the `B' final. Their time of 1:21.95 would have been good enough for seventh had they qualified for the `A' final Friday morning.
The women's 200 free relay team finished seventh in 1:35.39, their second fastest effort this season. Sophomore Claire Hedenskog anchored the relay before tying for a 13th-place finish in the 50 free. Her time of 23.77 was just three-hundredths of a second shy of matching her personal best.
With two days of competition to go, ASU's men are in 10th-place with 45 points. The Sun Devil women are also in 10th, with 53.5 points.
ASU's swimming teams are up against tough competition this week. The men's field includes No. 1 Texas, No. 5 Arizona, No. 7 California, No. 9 Michigan, No. 19 SMU, No. 22 Harvard and No. 25 Wisconsin, plus unranked Nebraska, Kansas and TCU. The women's field is made up of No. 2 UCLA, No. 3 Arizona, No. 4 Stanford, No. 5 California, No. 10 Texas, No. 13 Michigan, No. 12 Wisconsin, No. 15 SMU and No. 18 Minnesota, plus unranked Nebraska, Rice and TCU.
Saturday, preliminaries and event finals will be conducted for the 400 IM, 200 free, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke and the 200 medley relay.
