Ali Hanif

TitleAssistant Coach
Ali Hanif completed his first season with the Sun Devil soccer program in the fall of 2023 and helped the team reach the NCAA National Championship for a second consecutive season.

Working primarily with the goalkeepers, Hanif played a role in Pauline Nelles, setting the program record with nine shutouts, recording a 0.95 goals-against-average, the fewest goals conceded since 2007 (17), and Nelles being the first ASU Goalkeeper to win multiple goalkeeper of the week awards in the same season.

Hanif came to ASU from Cal State Bakersfield, where he was an assistant coach during the 2022 season. He was named the Roadrunners' Interim Head Coach on May 11, 2023. He was also the Director of Goalkeeping at South Valley Surf Soccer Club for the 2022-2023 season.

Before his time in Bakersfield, Hanif coached at Illinois State following two seasons at MidAmerica Nazarene as an assistant coach overseeing the goalkeepers. He helped MNU reach the Heart of America Conference tournament in both seasons, including making the NAIA Tournament appearance for the second time in program history and winning 14 games during his first season.

Additionally, Hanif has served as the director of goalkeeping at Kansas City Athletics SC (ECNL) and the Kansas ODP as a goalkeeper coach from 2018-2021. Hanif helped numerous goalkeepers make college commitments over the years.

In 2017, Hanif joined the WPSL staff at GSI/KC Athletics Pride for two seasons, working with numerous goalkeepers who now play the trade in the NWSL and abroad. He also spent time on staff with Tony Dicicco, SoccerPlus Goalkeeping school from 2014-2018.

Hanif began his coaching career in 2008 on staff with Manchester United F.C., working with various areas of the club. Before coming to the U.S., he held assistant and head coaching positions at Loreto College (Manchester, England) with the men's program (2012-18).

Hanif's career has spanned England and the United States over the last 16 years. Since 2008, he has coached professionally with Manchester United F.C. at the NCAA Division I and NAIA levels and in the Elite Clubs National League.

Hanif presented coach education at the United Soccer Coaches National Convention in January 2024 (Anaheim, Calif.) and teaches goalkeeping coaching courses with United Soccer Coaches, Arizona Soccer Association, and United Goalkeeping Alliance.

Hanif holds his USSF B License, UEFA B Goalkeeping License, United Soccer Coaches Advanced National Goalkeeping License, English F.A. and Scottish F.A. Goalkeeping Licenses.

A native of Manchester, England, Hanif attended Manchester Metropolitan University and earned a bachelor's degree in Coaching and Sports Development in 2015.

He resides in Arizona with his wife, Jamie, and their two dogs, Nynette and Mr. Poe.
