Ron English begins his fifth season at Arizona State and his second as the Sun Devils' cornerbacks coach. The previous three seasons English tutored the secondary, playing an instrumental role in the development of ASU's safety group, including two-time honorable-mention All-Pac-10 selection Alfred Williams.
In 1999 the Sun Devils ranked third in the conference in pass defense, surrendering just 226 yards per game. He coached in the 1999 and 2000 Aloha Bowl games.
English, who was a graduate assistant coach for ASU during the 1994-95 seasons, coached the San Diego State secondary from 1996-97. English played for the California Golden Bears as a safety from 1987-90, including a visit to the 1990 Copper Bowl versus Wyoming.
Prior to coaching at San Diego State, English served as the outside linebackers coach at Northern Arizona University. He also coached the defensive backs at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, Calif., before becoming a graduate assistant at ASU where he worked with the defensive line.
He coached in the Southern California Bowl in 1993.
After playing only one season of football at Ganesha High School, English went on to California where he was a four-year starter on special teams and started at strong safety his senior year. English collected 134 total tackles and seven sacks during his career.
He coached All-WAC cornerback Ricky Parker, who played with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 1996. In his second year at SDSU, he coached the entire secondary, which included free safety Jason Moore and strong safety Rico Curtis. Moore and Curtis earned all-WAC honors.
English, 33, graduated from California in 1990 with a bachelor's degree in communications. He then earned his master's degree in education administration from ASU in 1995.
English is married to the former Sophia Woodard, and the couple has one son, Simon Everett.
