MEN'S GOLF 2008-09 SEASON IN REVIEW (RANDY LEIN/17th SEASON)
Tied for fifth at the NCAA Championships in Toledo, Ohio, with its second-place stroke play finish and then a quarterfinal match play loss to eventual NCAA champion Texas A&M...ASU has made 16 NCAA Championship appearances in Jesper Kennegard at the West Regional, ASU has won or tied for the title in a NCAA Regional six times...team won its Thunderbird Invitational for the seventh time in the past 11 seasons (1999, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2008 and 2009) and for the 15th time overall April 9-10...finished the season ranked 11th by Golfweek, tied for fifth by the Golf Coaches Association and seventh by Golfstat...ASU has now qualified for NCAA Championship 25 of the past 26 seasons, including each of the past seven, tied for the fourth-best active streak in the nation, as only six teams have made the NCAA Championships in each of the last five seasons...Stephan Gross finished the season ranked 36th by Golfweek, with Jesper Kennegard (63rd) also in the top 75...Kim's 72.20 stroke average is the fifth-best in program history by a freshman, behind only three NCAA champions in Jesper Kennegard (72.16 in 2007-08)...ASU produced four All-Americans this year for the first time since 1995, as Borsheim, Kennegard, Gross and sophomore Scott Pinckney all earned honorable mentiton from the GCAA, while Borsheim and Gross also earned Golfweek honorable mention honors....Randy Lein has now produced 39 All-American honors among 18 players in his 17-year Sun Devil career...of the 30 teams that made the NCAA championships in 2009, ASU was one of only 15 who made the field in 2008, as nine teams from Golfweek's top-30 did not make the field...ASU has 10 top-10 finishes under Lein in his 17 years, third-most in the nation in that era...Kennegard tied for ninth at the NCAA Championships, the best Sun Devil finish since freshman Alejandro Canizares won the NCAA title in 2003.
