Player Bio: Ben Thurmond



2003 (Senior): Named All-Pac-10 Honorable Mention and ASU co-Newcomer of the Year... earned Tempe Regional All-Tournament honors with five shutout innings against UNLV in regional final... finished his only year with the Sun Devils with an 8-0 record and a 2.73 ERA... led the Pac-10 in ERA and ranked 62nd in the NCAA... the senior transfer from Winthrop made 20 pitching appearances and 16 starts... went 6-0 with a 3.04 ERA in his 16 starts and 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA out of the bullpen... recorded 58 strikeouts in 79.0 innings pitched... ASU's best pitcher in Pac-10 play with a 2-0 record and 2.68 ERA... in his last three starts gave up four runs in 16.1 innings for a 2.20 ERA... recorded season-high eight strikeouts vs. Utah (3/8)... limited opponents to a .116 batting average with runners in scoring position... prior to coming to ASU, Thurmond earned three varsity letters at Winthrop University in South Carolina... earned All-American honors at Winthrop in 2001 after going 14-3 with a 2.88 ERA with 148 K's... played for Team USA with former Sun Devil Mike Esposito in the summer of 2001... drafted in the 24th round of the 2002 MLB Draft by the Chicago Cubs, but did not sign... improved his draft status after his season at ASU, being selected in the 15th round by the San Francisco Giants... signed with the Giants and made his professional debut with the Salem-Kaizer Volcanoes in the Northwest League.

2002 (Junior): A preseason All-American (Baseball American/Collegiate Baseball) heading into the year... had his season cut short by a sore arm suffered in a 120-pitch outing vs. Georgia Tech (3/10)... recorded a 4-3 record in nine starts on the mound with 61 strikeouts in 64.0 innings... played briefly with the Falmouth Commodores in the Cape Cod League.

2001 (Sophomore): Named third-team All-American by Baseball America... helped lead Winthrop to 48-victory season and NCAA Tournament berth... named to all-regional tournament team... compiled a 14-3 record with a 2.88 ERA... led the Big South Conference in victories... named all-conference first-team... ranked seventh in the NCAA in wins (13)... helped lead Winthrop to had wins over national powers Florida, Alabama, North Carolina State, and Georgia... was 7-0 in road games... finished the year with 148 strikeouts in 150 innings... set single season Winthrop records for wins (14), innings pitched (150.0) and strikeouts (148).

Team USA (Summer 2001): Became first Winthrop player to ever make the USA Baseball National Team... went 4-2 with 2.83 ERA in nine appearances (two starts, 1 CG)... traveled with team to Japan and toured the United Stats as part of the Red, White and Blue Tour.

2000 (Freshman): Named freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball... led the Big South Conference with a 2.41 ERA... saw action in 19 games with seven starts... was 4-3 with two saves and one complete-game effort... struck out 78 batters in 89.2 innings... hit .251 at the plate while playing second base with three home runs and 16 RBI.

High School: A 1999 graduate of Lower Richland High School... played three years of varsity baseball... coached by Henry Mixon... set school record with 11-1 record as a senior... led league with 13 home runs and 42 RBI at the plate... All-Area 4A Player of the Year... named all-state, all-area, all-academic and all-region junior and senior years... was 3-0 with a 2.12 ERA and 23 strikeouts during his junior year... led his American Legion team (Richland Post 6) to the 2001 World Series after winning the state and south regional championship... was 9-1 with a 1.24 ERA and a .137 opponent batting average with Richland Post 6.

MLB Draft: Selected in the 24th round of the 2002 MLB draft by the Chicago Cubs... redrafted in 2003 in the 15th round by San Francisco.

Personal: Full name is J Benjamin Thurmond II... named after his grandfather... is the son of Jay and Medina Thurmond of Hopkins, S.C.... has one brother Lin (26)... was a member of Who's Who Among American High School students... named to the honor roll throughout high school.
