A WEEK AGO: The Sun Devils completed their longest road swing this season by splitting a pair in Utah. ASU suffered its first loss of the year with a heartbreaking 0-1 overtime defeat to the Utes. The goal came on a breakaway just 1:24 into the first overtime period. The Sun Devils could only muster seven shots compared to Utah's 27. Devil keeper Erin Reinke was solid, making 13 saves on the night. However, ASU would bounce back in a big way on Sunday against Utah State in Logan. The Devils unloaded on the Aggies goalie, posting three goals each in the first and second halfs. The scoring began at the 3:51 mark when forward Sarah Blaska fed Antoinette Marjanovic for her first of the day. Freshman Karine Inoue then laced one pass the Utah State keeper for her third of the year. Just three minutes before the half, Blaska teamed up with Inoue for her first goal of the season. The second half scoring began with forward Jaclyn Clark heading the ball into the goal off of a pass from Inoue. In the 64th minute, freshman Erin McGinnis scored her first goal of her career with an assist from Kim Wagner. Just a minute later, Marjanovic rounded out the scoring for ASU with an unassisted goal for her second of the match.
ABOUT THE COMPETITION: The UTEP Miners are led by freshman Rebecca Calder, who leads the team as well as the WAC with six goals and 15 points. Other point producers for UTEP are Jennifer Biondi (3 goals, 5 Assists) and '96 WAC Freshman of the Year Ja'net Esparza (2 goals, 5 assists). Goalkeeper Amanda Smith, a local product from Phoenix, has recorded 21 saves with a 0.64 GAA and three shutouts. Last season ASU loss to UTEP, 1-2 at the Lobo Women's Soccer Classic in Albuquerque.
REINKE IN GOAL: Despite sitting out most of last season with a head injury, redshirt freshman Erin Reinke has been a solid fixture in goal for ASU this year. In five games, Reinke has made 26 saves, allowed only four goal and collected two shutouts. Her 0.80 goals against average ranks her fifth in the West region and second in the Pac-10. Additionally, Reinke's two shutouts ties her for the lead in the Pac-10 Conference.
