ASU Soccer Hosts LMU and Tennessee

Sun Devils look to bounce back after split

ON TAP: The Arizona State soccer team (6-2-0, 1-0-0 Pac-10) will play host to Loyola Marymount University (5-2-0, 0-0-0 WCC) on Friday, at 7:00 p.m. and the University of Tennessee (5-4-0, 1-3-0 SEC) on Sunday, at 11:00 a.m.

A WEEK AGO: The Sun Devils came away with a split, winning on Friday 5-0 over Creighton, but dropped its first home game to New Mexico 1-3. Against Creighton, six ASU players tallied at least one point in the victory, including the school's first hat trick turned in by forward Jaclyn Clark. ASU's first goal, and the only goal of the half, was netted by freshman sensation Antoinette Marjanovic with an assist from Karine Inoue. The goal was scored on a breakaway to the left corner at the 5:25 mark. The Devils then put the match away in the second half scoring four goals on four shots. Clark scored her first goal of the night when she headed it over the keeper with an assist from Kim Wagner. Marjanovic notched her second goal in the 79th minute when midfielder Jessica Bohl slid a pass behind the Creighton defender. A Creighton turnover deep in their end led to Clark's second tally with an assist from Sarah Blaska, who leads the team in assists with four. Marjanovic would then nail a crossing pass to Clark for ASU fifth goal, completing Clark's hat trick. Against New Mexico, the Devils would have several scoring chances but could only muster one goal. The score came in the 41st minute when Clark crossed the ball to the left corner to sophomore midfielder Kerrie Kulak. This was Kulak's first goal of the season and Clark's seventh point of the weekend.

THE COMPETITION: LMU is off to its best start in their five year history ... the Lions are led by freshman forward Angela Ichinose's three goals ... junior forward Jessica Lyon has two goals and two assists ... Tracy Sharp and Celeste Adams have split the goalkeeping duties with Sharp posting two shutouts and a1.28 GAA. ... this will be the second meeting between LMU and ASU with LMU blanking ASU 3-0 last year ... Tennessee has 17 players with at least one point ... senior forward Debbie Markovich leads the team with 12 points (4 goals, 4 assists) ... sophomore Melissa Covington is the Lady Vols top goal scorer with five ... this will be the first meeting between two second-year programs.

REINKE IN GOAL: Despite sitting out most of last season with a head injury, redshirt freshman Erin Reinke has been a solid fixture in goal for ASU this year. In eight games, Reinke has made 46 saves, allowed only eight goals and collected three shutouts. Her 0.99 GAA ranks her sixth in the West region and fourth in the Pac-10. Additionally, Reinke's 46 saves ranks her third in the conference.

CABLE READY: FOX Sports Arizona will rebroadcast the September 28th Arizona State versus New Mexico match on Tuesday, September 30, at 11 a.m. with a replay on Friday, October 3, at 3 p.m.

ONE-TWO PUNCH: Part of the ASU success this season can be attributed to freshmen Karine Inoue and Jaclyn Clark. The two players have combined for 36 shots, recorded nine goals and six assists. They are also responsible for over a third of the team's points with 24. Inoue, a forward from Laguna Hills, Calif., also has a game-winning goal to her credit. Clark, a native of Rochester Hills, Mich., plays forward and has posted at least one point in five of ASU's eight games, including her first hat trick against Creighton.

THE CROATIAN SENSATION: Eight games into the '97 season, freshman midfielder Antoinette Marjanovic has already set the school record for most goals scored (7), total points (17) and game-winning goals (3). The Mayfield Senior product from Los Angeles, Calif., was the youngest and first American-Croatian to play on the Croatian National women's team. Marjanovic's three game-winning goals ranks her second in the West region and her seven goals places her fourth in the region.

CORNER KICKS: ASU's six goals scored against Utah State is the most ever ... the five goal margin of victory over Creighton is the largest ever ... ASU has outscored their opponents 23-8 ... ASU has broke eight team records so far this year ... sophomore forward Sarah Blaska's four assists set a new school record and ties her for fourth in the Pac-10 ... before the New Mexico loss, Antoinette Marjanovic had scored two goals in each of the previous three games ... 11 different Sun Devils have contributed at least one point ... at this time last year, ASU had scored only seven goals comparied to 23 this season ... the ASU match will mark the end of a five-game road swing for Tennessee.
