Women's Golf Comes Out Strong on Day Two of Pac-10 Championships

April 18, 2011

TEMPE, Ariz. -- The Arizona State women's golf team came out strong in the second round of play on Mon., April 18 with defending Pac-10 champion Carlota Ciganda moving into a tie for fourth place and the team posting a 8-over 296 on the day to hold its seventh place position at the 2011 Pac-10 women's golf Championships at the ASU Karsten Golf Course.

"[Carlota] knows that she is going to have to go out and shoot a low number tomorrow," said Head Coach Melissa Luellen of junior Ciganda's play. "She'd probably rather come from behind rather than be in the lead and protecting. She'll get to play really aggressive tomorrow and that's her style. I think it could be really exciting."

Ciganda moved from a tie for 23rd place on the first day to a tie for fourth place at the end of the second day of play. She shot a 3-under 69 on the day for a two-round total score of 1-under 143. She is three strokes back from tournament leader Tiffany Lua of UCLA.

"Obviously Carlota got it going today, she hit the ball a lot better," said Luellen. "The wind is blowing a little bit more which makes the course a little more challenging, but I think starting off on the tenth hole is definitely an advantage."

Junior teammate Giulia Molinaro moved into a tie for 26th place from her 27th spot after round one. She shot a 3-over 75 on the day for a two-day total of 7-over 151. Freshman teammate Daniela Ordonez, who was previously tied with Molinaro for 27th, moved into a tie for 29th after shooting a 4-over 76 in round two. Her total tournament score after the second day is 8-over 152.

Freshman Justine Lee moved from a tie for 37th place into a tie for 34th place after round two. Lee shot a 4-over 76 on the day for a two-day total of 10-over 154. Freshman teammate Laura Blanco held her 45th spot shooting a 6-over 78 on the day for a two-day total of 15-over 159.

"I was really proud of how they came back on the front nine and kept fighting and making some birdies to get some shots back," said Luellen. "We are learning how to continue to get stronger everyday for the rest of post season."

Arizona State held their seventh-place position after round two of the tournament with a score of 8-over 296 on the day and a two-round total score of 24-over 600. USC leads the tournament with a score of 3-over 291 on the day and a two-day total of 3-under 573.

All 10 teams shot over par on the second day of the Pac-10 Championships.

"If we can post our best score of the tournament tomorrow we would like to try and win the day," expressed Luellen. "If we could have the low score of the tournament or the low score of the day tomorrow I think that would be a victory for us."
