Baldy Castillo Invitational Information: Final Schedule (pdf) | Heat Sheets
TEMPE - The Arizona State University track and field program will take to the outdoor surfaces this weekend as it is set to play host to the Baldy Castillo Invitational at Sun Angel Stadium on Friday and Saturday. The Sun Devils are one week removed from the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships and are now working toward preparations for the Pac-10 and NCAA Outdoor Championships that will be held in May and June, respectively.
Last weekend, seven Sun Devils competed in the NCAA indoor meet with the women placing in a tie for 40th and the men not scoring in the competition. Anna Jelmini led the charge for ASU in College Station, Texas, as she took fifth in the shot put after entering the 21-woman competition as the 14th-ranked entrant. The men’s lone competitors was Jordan Clarke in the shot put, who entered ranked 15th of the 16 men in the field and reached the final where he was ninth, just one place shy of scoring in the meet.
The USTFCCCA announced its list of student-athletes that earned All-America honors following their appearances at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships with one earning First Team honors and six earning Second Team honors. Anna Jelmini was the first-team honoree for the Sun Devils as she finished fifth in the shot put while Jasmine Chaney earned a pair of second-team accolades as she was ninth in the 200m dash and was a member of the 4x400m relay team that placed 12th. The other members of the relay included Sarah Geren, Keia Pinnick and Kayla Sanchez, all of whom earned second-team honors. Jordan Clarke, who finished ninth in the shot put, was the lone men’s honoree as he was a second-team selection.
This weekend, however, the Sun Devils will switch their focus to the outdoor season as several teams and individuals will visit Joe Selleh Track at Sun Angel Stadium on Friday and Saturday for the Baldy Castillo Invitational. The first event of the outdoor season is the first of five home meets this year and the first of two in a row (ASU Invitational next weekend in Tempe). Schools that will be represented with at least one athlete in the meet includes: ASU, Dickinson State, Glendale CC, Grand Canyon, Manhattan, Mesa CC, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota State, Northern Arizona, Scottsdale CC and South Dakota.
On Friday, the men’s hammer will open the competition starting a 2 p.m. with the women’s hammer following. New to Friday nights at Sun Angel Stadium this year will be the addition of the men and women’s pole vault, which will both start at 6 p.m. on side-by-side runways in the south end of the stadium. On Saturday, the discus will lead off the competition at 10 a.m. with several field events taking place at noon. The running events will begin at 1 p.m.
Next weekend, the Sun Devils will play host to the ASU Invitational on March 25-26, holding a similar schedule to this weekend’s event in Tempe.
