Vying for its first Pac-10 title since 1994, Stanford leads after day one of the 2010 Pac-10 Men's Golf Championships hosted by Arizona State. The teams saw temperatures soaring into the 90s at the par-71, ASU Karsten Golf Course. The tournament features 10 nationally ranked teams, five of which are ranked in the Top 10, according to Golfstat. Stanford junior Sihwan Kim and Joseph Bramlett lead the top-ranked Cardinal, who bests second-place Arizona State by 13 strokes. Kim finished with nine birdies in the first round and six in the second.
"It feels pretty special right now," Kim said. "It'll be a special thing if we win it. I feel like the Pac-10 is the strongest conference in the nation, so if we win this it will be a big deal."
Kim ended the day with a two-round total of 9-under 133 (63-70) and is in fourth place.
"I played well on the very first nine," Kim said. "That kind of kept me going. Right after I ate lunch I kind of went back to my old self, but I was able to get through that and finish well."
Paced by tournament leader Jesper Kennegard, the 13th ranked Sun Devils are in second place after the first two rounds of play at 22-under 688. ASU was led by the 17th ranked Kennegard, who ended the day with 14 birdies and only one bogey. The junior matched his career low with a 63 in the first round for a two-round total of 129 (63-66). Kennegard is trying to become the first Sun Devil to win the Pac-10 individual championship since Paul Casey won it in 1998-2000. Kennegard is also trying for his fourth individual title, as he also won the Southern Highlands title this year.
"I was playing pretty solid," Kennegard said. "I had some good approach shots and my putting has been really good. I didn't make very many big mistakes, I just had one bogey."
No. 10 USC sits in third place and was led by 55th ranked freshman T.J. Vogel. Vogel finished with a 7-under 135 (64-71). No. 6 Washington, who led the field after the first round of competition, finished the day in fourth place. Washington is led by senior Richard Lee, who finished the day with an 8-under 134 (64-70). Lee is ranked 67th and had 12 birdies after round two. No. 4 UCLA is in fifth shooting a 17-under 693 followed by sixth place Cal with a 6-under 704. No. 2 Oregon is in seventh place with a 7-under 703 and Oregon State is in eighth place shooting a 6-under 704. No. 44 Arizona is in ninth place (1-under 709) and Washington State is in 10th place with a 12-over 722.The third round of the 2010 Pac-10 men's golf Championship begins tomorrow at the ASU Karsten Golf Course with teams teeing off at 9 a.m. Results are available online at www.golfstat.com.
