TEMPE – The Pac-10 Conference began honoring athletes of the week on April 12 with one member of the Arizona State University track and field program earning distinction following his solid weekend in competition. For his efforts, Ryan Whiting was selected the Pac-10 Men’s Field Athlete of the Week.
For the second meet in a row, Whiting, a senior, won the shot put at home and did so with a mark that broke his own school record and improved upon the best throw so far in the world. At the 31st Sun Angel Track Classic, Whiting won the premiere shot put with a toss of 21.71m (71-02.75) to take the event by nearly 12 feet and move ahead of all collegiate competitors by 10-1.50. His toss also broke a 28 year-old venue record that Brian Oldfield set at the 1982 Classic with a winning mark of 21.52m. Whiting also competed in the Mesa Classic one day earlier and took second in the discus with a toss of 56.94m (186-10), which stands at the 10th-best in the NCAA right now.
Whiting and many of his Sun Devil teammates will travel to Walnut, Calif., to compete in the 52nd Mt. SAC Relays on Friday and Saturday.
