After a productive Pac-10 opening weekend, the Arizona State women's tennis team is set to host three teams this weekend. The Sun Devils welcome Memphis to the Whiteman Tennis Center on Wednesday and will host Pac-10 opponents Oregon and USC on Friday and Saturday. The match against the Tigers begins at 1:30 p.m. and the Sun Devils will battle it out against the Ducks at 1:00 on Friday. Their match against USC is scheduled for Saturday at noon. The Sun Devils are 6-2, 2-2 Pac-10.
Last Week
The Sun Devils emerged from their Pac-10 opener in the state of Washington with a flawless conference record. The Sun Devils began the weekend defeating Washington State on their home courts 5-2. The team capped the weekend with an upset over No. 18 Washington, whom they also topped 5-2. The Sun Devils improved their record to 6-2 with their only losses this season being a non-conference match to No. 3 California and No. 25 Georgia Tech.
Scouting the Competition
USC is ranked 13th in the country and will bring Maria Sanchez, the nation's No. 3 ranked player along with 21st ranked Alison Ramos, 22nd ranked Danielle Lao and 91st ranked Valeria Pulido. USC's Sanchez also ranked on two different doubles teams with Lyndsay Kinstler (36th) and with Valeria Pulido (40th). Neither Memphnis nor Oregon are ranked.
Crickey Brycki!
After an injury kept sophomore Michell Brycki from competing the first few weeks of the spring season, she has came back stronger than ever. Brycki currently boasts a flawless dual record of 5-0 and has moved up to the fifth spot in the lineup.
Movin' On Up!
Micaela Hein has primarily been the No. 3 singles player throughout her entire ASU career but has recently moved up to the No. 2 slot. The move has proven to be worthy as she is 2-0 in the higher slot.
All-American Girls
Two Sun Devils return as All-Americans. Kelcy McKenna was recognized as one of the 2009's bests in both singles and doubles. Hein earned All-American honors as McKenna's doubles partner.
What A Coach!
A role model on and off the courts, Sheila McInerney was recently honored by the YWCA in their Tribute to Women campaign. The 26th year head coach has been selected as the Sports Leader nominee. As the head coach of the Sun Devils, McInerney boasts a 377-239 record and has taken ASU to 16 NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearances. In addition her teams are frequently honored for their academic achievement.
