ASU Swimming Alumni Weekend A Success

Oct. 26, 2009

The Arizona State swimming and diving team polished off another successful Alumni Weekend. The alumni kicked off the weekend by meeting at the top of Studio 5C in Tempe, Ariz., for an Alumni Mixer.

The festivities continued Saturday as the past met the present in the annual Alumni Meet. Although both the men and women's current teams emerged victorious, the Alumni Team proved many of them could continue to put up a good fight as a few of the races were won by alums.

Saturday evening saw the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center transformed into a classy host site of the 2009 Swimming Gala. With elegant Maroon and Gold decorations abundant, guests were able to bid on fantastic auction items and hear from several speakers. Six-time gold medalist Amy Van Dyken served as Mistress of Ceremonies, while head coach Dorsey Tierney-Walker emphasized the potential of the program. Former Auburn head coach David Marsh discussed the five D's of success (dedication, discipline, determination, desire, drive) and Bill Rose, current coach of the Mission Viejo Nadadores, spoke about the importance of college swimming. Attendees also witnessed quite the show from the ASU diving team as they performed an exhibition. With three 2008 Olympians on the current team, they looked to be in top form and appeared to be a force to be reckoned with.

The Sun Devil swimming alumni wrapped up the weekend by playing golf on the ASU Karsten Course and heading over to former head swimming coach, the late Ron Johnson's wife's house for a barbeque.
