TEMPE, Ariz. - Following another impressive weekend of competition in the shot put, Arizona State University track and field student-athletes Sarah Stevens and Ryan Whiting were selected as the Pac-10 Field Athletes of the Week for the week of April 16-22, the Conference announced Monday. The honor marks the second week in a row that Stevens was named the Pac-10 Women's Field Athlete of the Week while the honor for Whiting is the first for the redshirt freshman.
Stevens continued to dominate and improve on her personal best mark in the shot put over the weekend at the UCSD Triton Invitational as she recorded a school-record toss of 18.40m (60-04.50). Her mark is an over one-foot improvement from last week's school record Currently, Stevens has the top collegiate mark in the nation, ranks second in the history of the Pac-10 Conference and stands fifth on the current world lists.
Whiting took over the national lead in the shot put with his winning mark of 20.27m (66-06.00) at the UCSD Triton Invitational over the weekend and moved into second on the all-time Arizona State list in the process. In just his second outdoor shot put competition with the Sun Devils, Whiting became just the third Sun Devil to ever record a 66-foot throw or better and currently ranks seventh on the world lists.
All told this year, a Sun Devil has earned five of the 12 honors handed out after the trio of Stevens, Latosha Wallace and Domenik Peterson were selected for the weekly accolades last week.
Arizona State will play host to the annual Double Dual on Saturday inside Sun Angel Stadium as Arizona and Northern Arizona invade for the intrastate competition.
