As the 2007 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships came to a close Saturday at the in , No. 21 State University, led by platform diving national runner-up Micky Benedetti, enjoyed a third-day surge, ultimately placing 22nd overall with 36 points.
Benedetti was the highlight of the day, recording a personal-best score of 412.10 in Saturday's platform diving finals round, finishing only 2.80 points shy of the NCAA Championship score. In the event's preliminary round, the Pacific-10 Conference three-meter and platform diving champion totaled a score of 377.00, enabling him to compete in the platform diving championship finals round.
Junior CJ Nuess also added to ASU's overall score, finishing the 1650 freestyle in 15:09.45, ranking him 16th in the nation in the event. Sophomore Gal Nevo also competed in the 1650 freestyle, placing 20th overall with a time of 15:18.81.
Freshman Ante Cvitkovic enjoyed an impressive NCAA Championships debut, setting a personal-best 200 backstroke time Saturday, finishing in 1:46.52, which also stands as the fifth-fastest time in the event in Sun Devil history and placed him 36th overall in the event.
Saturday concludes the 2007 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships and ASU's 2006-07 season.
