In the last regular season meet of the 2006-07 campaign, Arizona State University's men's and women's swimming and diving teams fell to the University of Arizona in Tucson on Saturday afternoon. The Sun Devil men were bested by a score of 171-102, while ASU's women were defeated by a final mark of 167-114.
Leading the way in the water for the Sun Devil women was All-American junior Caitlin Andrew, claiming a victory in the 100 fly (54.79), while finishing as the runner-up in the 50 free (23.64).
The Sun Devil divers contributed significantly on the afternoon, as sophomore Erin Hobbs placed first in the 1-meter (247.05) and second in the 3-meter (247.03), while senior Cassidy Farwell took second to Hobbs in the 1-meter and finished third overall in the 3-meter.
Freshman Jess Perazzo narrowly trailed Andrew in the 50 free, finishing third overall in the event, touching in 23.74.
Junior Sarah Fischer aided ASU's overall scoring total, finishing as the runner-up in the 1000 freestyle, completing the distance event in 10:11.13.
Adding to ASU's scoring effort were seniors Carissa Abe (100 back) and Abra Armour (200 free), and freshman Jamie Martinez (200 fly), all of whom submitted top-three finishes on the day.
Stealing the show for the Sun Devils was redshirt freshman diver Micky Benedetti, who claimed victories in both 1-meter and 3-meter diving events. The Pac-10 Conference Diver of the Month for December recorded scores of 337.20 in the 1-meter and 366.82 in the 3-meter, greatly aiding ASU's overall scoring surge.
Junior CJ Nuess continued to provide a spark of leadership for the Sun Devil men, as the Medical Lake, Wash., native touched as the runner-up in the 1000 free, finishing only .45 seconds behind first-place finisher Matt Biel of . Nuess completed the event in 9:12.39, and also recorded a top-three finish in the 200 fly as well.
Sophomore Sean Boyle also remained as one of ASU's top swimmers, touching second in the 200 free (1:40.96), while also completing in the top-three in the 100 free.
Backstroke specialist freshman Ante Cvitkovic submitted ASU's top performance in the stroke on the day, scoring highly in the 100 back.
With the completion of the day's meet in , the Sun Devil men (2-7) and women (4-6) have wrapped up the 2006-07 regular season schedule, and will next compete at the 2007 Pacific-10 Conference Championships, to be held Feb. 14-17 in Long Beach, Calif., for the women and Feb. 21-24 in Federal Way, Wash., for the men.
