As the 2007 Pacific-10 Conference Men's Swimming Championships continued with preliminary rounds of the 500 free, 200 IM and 50 free, No. 21 Arizona State University showcased a trio of NCAA consideration times, while junior CJ Nuess advanced to the 500 freestyle finals round and sophomore Magnus Kjellberg entered the ASU record books in the 50 free.
Nuess placed earned an NCAA `B' mark for his time of 4:24.21 in the opening round of the 500 freestyle, placing him eighth overall and allowing the Medical Lake, Wash. native to advance to the event's finals round to be held Thursday evening. Nuess' time is only .07 seconds off his 2006-07 season-best in the event, which he accomplished while competing at the in December.
Junior Lucas Azevedo also posted a noteworthy performance in the 500 freestyle preliminary round, touching in 4:27.47. Sophomore Brandon Pierson and junior Jacob Fischer also participated in the event's preliminary round, which included a season-best time in the 500 freestyle by Fischer.
The Sun Devils enjoyed a remarkable overall team-effort in the 50 freestyle preliminary round, as Magnus Kjellberg and junior Steve Neuwert each earned NCAA consideration times, and ultimately seven of ASU's eight participants established season-bests for the event.
Kjellberg paced the team for the event, touching in 20.15, which stands as the 10th-fastest finish in the event in ASU history and the fastest by a Sun Devil all season, while also earning Kjellberg an NCAA `B' cut in the 50 free.
Following right behind Kjellberg was Neuwert, who has been ASU's most effective sprint freestyle swimmer throughout the season, concluding the event in 20.17. The Perth, Australia native also earned NCAA `B' recognition for his performance, which also ranks as the second-best 50 freestyle time of the season by a Sun Devil and Neuwert's personal best finish in the event.
Adding to the impressive overall performance in the event were sophomore Mohammed Madwa (20.74), freshman Ante Cvitkovic (20.93), freshman Cade Judkins (21.36), freshman Brian Anderson (21.65) and freshman Marin Naranca (21.77), all of whom swam personal Sun Devil-best 50 freestyle times during Thursday's preliminary rounds.
Rounding out Thursday's preliminary rounds was competition in the 200 IM, in which sophomore Gal Nevo recorded ASU's best time in the event of the season, finishing in 1:50.58.
Freshman Max Laney enjoyed a solid contribution as well, finishing the 200 IM in the fastest time of his young Sun Devil career.
