WALNUT CREEK, Calif.-- Six Sun Devils were named to the All-Academic Softball Team as announced by Pac-10 Commissioner Tom Hansen. Senior Bridgette Caron, junior Heidi Knabe, senior Jenn McCard, senior Desiree Serrano, junior Michelle Smith and sophomore Rhiannon Baca were all honored. To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade-point average and be either a starter or significant contributor. True freshmen and transfer students are not eligible.
Caron (Fallbrook, Calif.) was named to the Pac-10 All-Academic Team for the second straight season, garnering first team honors. Caron has a 3.69 GPA as a dance major and has seen action in 36 games, batting .233 with seven runs scored in 14 hits, four for doubles and one triple as well as batting in 12 RBIs.
Knabe (Simi Valley, Calif.) was named to the Pac-10 All-Academic First Team for the second straight season. Knabe has a 3.69 as a Kinesiology major and has seen action in 40 games, batting .200 with eight runs scored off of 22 hits, one for a double and three for home runs while driving in 14 RBIs.
McCard (La Palma, Calif.) was named to the Pac-10 All-Academic First Team for the third straight season. McCard has a 3.77 GPA as an elementary education major and has seen action in 38 games, batting .198 with seven runs scored off of 16 hits, with one double and one home run, driving in nine RBIs.
Serrano (Colton, Calif.) was named to the Pac-10 All-Academic Team, garnering First Team honors. Serrano has a 3.67 GPA as a sociology major and has seen action on the mound in 24 games, with 17 wins, an ERA of 1.42 and 233 strikeouts as one of the most successful pitchers in Arizona State history.
Smith (Pleasant Hill, Calif.) was named to the Pac-10 All-Academic Team, earning First Team honors. Smith has a 3.59 GPA as a Kinesiology major and has seen action in all 62 games this season, batting .277 with 41 runs scored with 56 hits, three for doubles and three for triples, plating 16 RBIs on the season. Smith also leads the Pac-10 in stolen bases this season with 30.
Baca (Flagstaff, Ariz.) was named to the Pac-10 All-Academic Team, earning an honorable mention. The elementary education major has seen action in all 62 games, batting .241 with 31 runs scored off of 39 hits, six for doubles and seven for home runs, plating 20 RBIs on the season.
