COLUMBUS, Ohio - The No. 3 Arizona State women's golf team moved into the lead after carding a six-over 294 in the second round of the 2006 NCAA Championships, being played at the par 72, 6,203-yard Scarlet Golf Course.
The Sun Devils (586 through two rounds) concluded the day three strokes ahead of Duke (589). The Blue Devils, who started the day tied for fifth place, shot a four-over 292 on Wednesday to move into second place. Southern California, which led ASU by one stroke after the first round, slipped two spots to third place (591) following a 12-over 300. Tennessee moved up 10 spots to fourth place (593) after shooting a second-round best two-over 290. Rounding out the top five of the 24-team field were Purdue and Pepperdine, who were tied for fifth place (596) after both schools recorded rounds of seven-over 295.
"Our goal each day is to win the round and we have not won a round yet and we are still in the lead and so that is pretty good," said ASU head coach Melissa Luellen.
Leading ASU in the second round was junior Tiffany Tavee, who shot an even-par score of 72. Right behind Tavee was freshman Jennifer Osborn, who carded a one-over 73. Also contributing to ASU's team score on Wednesday were freshman Azahara Munoz, who shot a two-over 74, and senior Alissa Kuczka, who recorded a three-over 75.
Eileen Vargas of Pepperdine continued to lead the individual standings after shooting a one-under 71 to move to five-under 139 for the tournament. Osborn, who is currently the only other player under par in the tournament, is second at one-under 143. Other ASU individuals include Tavee, who is in a five-way tie for fifth place at one-over 145; Munoz, who is in a three-way tie for 12th place at three-over 147; Kuczka, who is tied for 39th place at seven-over 151 and junior Danelle Perata, who is tied for 115th place at 18-over 162.
The NCAA Championships continue with Thursday's third round. The Sun Devils will tee off in the final group of the day with Duke and USC at 1:20 p.m. EST on Thursday. Friday's final round tee times will be determined by Thursday's results.
