TEMPE, Ariz. - Three former members of the Arizona State University soccer program helped two American national teams post undefeated records over seas recently with Amy LePeilbet and full U.S. Women's National Team winning twice in Japan while Manya Makoski and Elizabeth Bogus assisted the U.S. Women's Under-21 National Team to a 3-0 record in Europe. All three are training with their respective teams in search of a roster spot for upcoming international tournaments.
Recent seniors Makoski and Bogus traveled with the U-21 squad to Holland and Germany where the American side opened with a 2-1 defeat of Dutch club team Seastum. The Americans then faced the full Dutch National Team and scored a 2-0 victory over a side that recently defeated France, one of the top women's teams in the world. The trip concluded on May 3 with the U.S. scoring a 3-0 defeat over German Bundesliga upper division team Duisburg, who had Germany's national team goal keeper Silke Rottenberg in goal.
Statistics for the trip were not immediately available, although Makoski and Bogus did see action on the pitch. Makoski, one of the top scorers in Sun Devil history, took over a new role with the team and moved to the defensive back line where she helped limit the team's opposition to one goal in three matches. Both Makoski and Bogus returned with the Americans and will now enter training camp as the U-21 squad prepares for the Nordic Cup in Norway, July 13-23. The Americans will look to capture their eighth Cup in a row this summer.
The full U.S. Women's National Team played a pair of international friendly matches in Japan over the weekend with the Americans scoring a 3-1 victory in the opener before closing the trip with a 1-0 decision. LePeilbet played in both matches, earning her 17th and 18th international caps, while starting in the first match of the trip. LePeilbet played the first half of the team's 3-1 victory and then came on in the 70th minute of play in the second match, subbing in for Tina Frimpong on the back line. LePeilbet helped the Americans shut out all foes in the 2005 season and has helped limit opponents to just three scores in nine contests this season.
The WNT now returns to its residency camp at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., as the team prepares for a pair of domestic matches with Sweden on July 15 and Canada on July 30. The full rosters for both squads will be announced at a later date following the conclusion of training camps.
