TEMPE, Ariz. - Following their final home meet of the season, the Arizona State University track and field team will send nine of its members to the UC San Diego Triton Invitational in La Jolla, Calif., Friday and Saturday as the season draws closer to an end. Following this weekend's action, the Sun Devils will have only the annual Double Dual with Arizona and Northern Arizona before competing in the Pac-10 Track and Field Championships in early May.
TRITON INVITATIONAL
The UC San Diego Triton Invitational will run Friday and Saturday in La Jolla with Arizona State being represented by five women and four men, all of which will compete in the throwing events. On the women's side, Sarah Stevens, Jessica Pressley, Sara Shisslak, Becky Holley and Lissa Regets will compete while the men will send Tomas Navarro, Andrew Smith, Andy Haas and Brad Roth.
HIGHLY RANKED
The Arizona State women are ranked fifth again this week according to the Trackwire Top 25 while also holding the No. 5 spot in the first coaches' poll of the 2006 outdoor season.
RECORD RUN
For the second time this season, a distance runner broke a school record. This time, the record performance came on the men's side as Ryan Warrenburg clocked a time of 13:43.29 in the 5,000m run at the Mt. SAC Relays on April 13. Warrenburg's time was a nine-second personal best and improved upon the old mark of 13:49.11 set by current teammate Aaron Aguayo set last year.
NEW TO THE LIST - PART I
Over the weekend, the Sun Devils saw five women's and five men's marks earn a place on the regional order lists for the first time this season. For the women, Amy Hastings qualified in the 1,500m run after running 4:47.29 in the mile while Victoria Jackson met the standard in the 5,000m run with her time of 16:45.46. In the field, Jessica Pressley (16.80m) and Sarah Stevens (16.76m) qualified in the shot put while Becky Holley earned a berth in the javelin (43.87m). The men picked up five marks on the track with Domenik Peterson earning berths in the 200m dash (20.86) and 400m dash (46.11). Aaron Aguayo qualified in the 1,500m run with his mile time of 4:04.30 while Ryan Warrenburg's school record performance in the 5,000m run (13:43.29) also made the list. The final mark came from Tomas Navarro in the hammer throw (55.74m).
NEW TO THE LIST - PART II
Casey Burchill also posted a qualifying mark in the 10,000m run, but he will not compete in the regional meet as the event is only contested at the national championships. His time of 29:07.09 earned him a provisional berth into the meet.
BUSY
Seven women and four men have qualified individually for the regional meet in two or more events so far this season with four of the women and one men qualifying for three events each. On the men's side, Domenik Peterson leads the way with qualifying marks in the 100m dash, 200m dash and 400m dash and also assisted the 4x100m and 4x400m relays in qualifying for the meet. For the women, Victoria Jackson has earned berths in the 1,500m, 5,000m and 10,000m runs while Jacquelyn Johnson has posted marks in the 100m hurdles, the high jump and the heptathlon. In the field, both Sarah Stevens and Jessica Pressley each have earned berths in the hammer, shot put and discus events.
ROOKIES ROLLING
Four Sun Devil rookies also have qualified for the regional meet this season with three of athletes finding success following their redshirt season. On the women's side, redshirt freshmen Jenna Kingma has qualified for the 1,500m and 5,000m runs while Sarah Stevens is on the list in the hammer, discus and shot put events. True freshmen Stephanie Garnett has also qualified for the regional meet in the long jump while the men's lone rookie, Joey Heller, has made the meet in the 5,000m run.
UP AND AWAY!
April Kubishta placed second in the women's pole vault at the Sun Angel Classic over the weekend as she cleared 4.06m (13-03.75) to become just the second Arizona State female to vault over 13 feet in competition. The other Sun Devil was Angela Tavlarides, who cleared 4.10m (13-05.25) one year ago.
WOMEN'S DANDY DOZEN
In the latest Dandy Dozen for the women, the Sun Devils have 11 entries with Amy Hastings (5,000m run) and Jacquelyn Johnson (heptathlon) predicted as the NCAA champion while five other marks rank among the Top 8 (scoring positions at the NCAA meet). Those include Brooke Bennett (eighth) in the steeplechase, Sarah Stevens in the shot put (fourth), hammer (fourth) and discus (eighth) and Jessica Pressley (eighth) in the shot put.
MEN'S DANDY DOZEN
Two individuals and one relay team are ranked among the Top 8 for the men with three others ranked on the list. Individually, Domenik Peterson is ranked eighth in the 200m dash while Ryan Zimmerman holds the same ranking in the triple jump. The 4x400m relay also is ranked, this week coming in at No. 5.
NATIONALLY KNOWN
Three men's and eight women's marks currently rank in the Top 8 (scoring positions at the national meet) with Jacquelyn Johnson leading the way as she leads the heptathlon as of April 19. Also for the women, Sarah Stevens holds at Top 8 placement in two events, including fifth in the hammer and eighth in the shot put while Jessica Pressley is ranked seventh in the shot put to round out the field entries. On the track, Amy Hastings (10,000m) and Brooke Bennett (3,000m steeplechase) are both ranked fourth while Jenna Kingma (5,000m) and Victoria Jackson (10,000m) are ranked fifth and eighth, respectively. On the men's side, Ryan Warrenburg (5,000m) is ranked fifth and Ryan Zimmerman (triple jump) is seventh. The 4x400m relay of Jerry Jones, Chris Adams, Rich Allen and Domenik Peterson are ranked sixth overall.
IN THE REGION
So far this season, the women have posted 28 individual regional qualifying marks and added three more relays while the men have recorded 20 individual entries and four relay marks. Of those marks, 17 of the women's individual marks and 10 of the men's are ranked among the Top 5 with all relay entries on both sides ranked in the Top 5. For the women, Brooke Bennett (steeplechase), Amy Hastings (10,000m) and Jacquelyn Johnson (heptathlon) hold the top spot on the order lists while the men boast Domenik Peterson (200m), Ryan Warrenburg (5,000m), Ryan Zimmerman (triple jump) and the 4x400m relay of Jerry Jones, Chris Adams, Rich Allen and Peterson.
PAC LISTS
According to the latest Pac-10 Conference lists, the women hold 28 marks ranked in the Top 8 while the men hold 17 marks in the Top 8. The women are led by Jacquelyn Johnson, who holds the top mark in the heptathlon (5,797 points) and is tied for the lead in the high jump (1.80m) with two others. Amy Hastings holds the top time in the 10,000m run while Sarah Stevens ranks first in the shot put (17.52m indoors). On the men's side, Domenik Peterson is the leader in the 200m dash (20.86) and Ryan Zimmerman leads the triple jump (15.82m). The 4x400m relay of Jerry Jones, Chris Adams, Rich Allen and Peterson also holds the top time in the event so far this season.
SOLID MARKS
At the Stanford Invitational last year, Amy Hastings ran 33:19.32 to set the school record in the 10,000m run. It was the same result one year later as Hastings clocked in at 33:17.89 to reset her top mark. Victoria Jackson, who ran the fourth-fastest time in school history in the same race last year, turned in a near 40 second improvement to clock in at 33:20.58 to move into the No. 2 position on the all-time list at ASU.
WALLACE SHINES
Latosha Wallace, in her first season with the Sun Devils, has fared quite well on the outdoor track so far this season as she has qualified regionally in the 400m dash and 400m hurdles while also helping the 4x400m relay earn a regional berth as well. Wallace currently ranks 10th in the nation in the hurdle event and is the only runner in the west region and the Pac-10 to record a time under one minute, coming in at 58.70. She currently is 35th in the nation in the open quarter while ranking sixth in the region and conference.
BRONZE
The women's track and field/cross country program has been hot this academic year as the cross country team finished fourth at the NCAA Championships to claim the first trophy for the women's program. Last weekend, the women made history again by finishing third overall at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in Fayetteville, Ark. That finish was better than the 1991 team's tie for fourth place.
GOLD
Although the team finished with the bronze medal in the team standings, two individual Sun Devil women won gold in the respective events to claim the program's first national titles since the 1992 indoor season. Amy Hastings won the individual title in the 5,000m run on the first day of the meet before Jacquelyn Johnson took home the title in the pentathlon.
MORE ON THE GOLD
The titles won by Amy Hastings and Jacquelyn Johnson marked the first time in program history that a national title in an indoor distance event and an indoor multi-event had been captured. Hastings' crown is the second distance title ever and the first since 1959 when Alex Henderson won the school's first NCAA title by taking the men's two mile run. The multi-event crown had been won three other times in school history with Dana Collins winning the outdoor pentathlon in 1977 (the first women's national title) before Gea Johnson in 1990 and Jacquelyn Johnson in 2004 won the outdoor heptathlon. All told, the women have now won seven individual and one relay national title indoors while adding 10 individual and three relay crowns outdoor. The men, despite not having won an indoor title, have collected 13 individual and one relay national championship, as well as the 1977 team title.
ALL-AMERICANS
Eight Sun Devils earned All-America honors at the NCAA Indoor Championships, including six women and both men's entrants. For the women, Jacquelyn Johnson (pentathlon), Amy Hastings (5,000m), Victoria Jackson (5,000m), Jenna Kingma (3,000m), Sarah Stevens (shot put) and Stephanie Garnett (weight throw) all attained the honor while Joshua Kinnaman (heptathlon) and Ryan Zimmerman (triple jump).
GROWING LEGACY
NCAA champions Amy Hastings and Jacquelyn Johnson added to their successful careers over the weekend by winning their first and second titles, respectively. Hastings, who became the first Sun Devil to win a distance event national title in track, also is the only ASU cross country runner to ever win the Pac-10 title, doing so in 2004. Johnson, the national runner-up indoors in 2004, also won the outdoor heptathlon in 2004 before redshirting last year to compete on the ASU basketball team.
NEXT TIME OUT
The Sun Devils head to Tucson next weekend as they are set to face intrastate rivals Arizona and Northern Arizona in the annual Double Dual. The meet is set for Roy P. Drachman Stadium on the Arizona campus on Saturday, April 29. Several Sun Devils also will travel to Stanford on Sunday, April 30, for the Cardinal Classic.
