Former Sun Devils Brunelli And Puhakka Compete In International Events

TEMPE, Ariz. (www.thesundevils.com) -- Former Arizona State University swimmer Nick Brunelli (Mansfield, Mass.) and diver Joona Puhakka (Helsinki, Finland) competed in international swimming and diving events over the weekend. Brunelli swam in the 8th FINA World Swimming Championships held in Shanghai, China while Puhakka competed in the LEN European Diving Championships Cup in Stockholm, Sweden.

At the World Swimming Championships, Brunelli swam in six events and finished in the top four in all but one of them. In the 4x100-meter medley relay, Brunelli swam the last leg to help the Americans to a second-place finish (3:28.00) in the event despite swimming in the eighth lane. Brunelli swam the second leg of the 4x200m freestyle relay team for the Americans helping them to a third-place finish (7:04.34) while competing in lane one. In the 4x100m freestyle, Brunelli swam the opening leg to help the Americans to a third-place finish (3:11.92) in the event.

In the 50m freestyle, Brunelli touched the wall in 21.62 to tie for third place with Ukraine's Oleksandr Volynets. Swimming in lane one, Brunelli swam to a fourth-place finish in the 100m freestyle recording a time of 47.91. In the 100m IM, Brunelli finished 15th during the semifinals touching the wall in 55.34.

In Stockholm, Sweden, at the LEN European Diving Championships Puhakka competed in the three-meter springboard and three-meter synchronized springboard events. In the three-meter dive, Puhakka recorded a 429.50 to place third in the event. In the three-meter synchronized event, Puhakka dove with Villie Vahtola. The pair recorded a score of 363.90 to finish third in the event.
