#9 Softball Tops #7 Oregon State 3-2, Snaps Winning Streak

April 1, 2006

Corvallis, - Fueled by Kaitlin Cochran's two home runs and Katie Burkhart's 11 strikeouts, the #9 Sun Devil Softball squad (37-3, 1-0 Pac-10) topped the #7 Oregon State Beavers (28-3, 1-1 Pac-10) 3-2 in extra innings, snapping a 28-game winning streak Saturday afternoon in Corvallis, Oregon. Cochran's two home runs give the Sun Devils a total of 46 on the season, which breaks the former all-time ASU team record for home runs in a season of 45.

The Beavers crossed the plate first after a Sun Devil error allowed lead-off hitter Cambria Miranda to reach safely where she was brought home with a ground-out to give the Beavers the 1-0 lead. The Sun Devils struck back in the third when a lead-off walk to Michelle Smith was brought home with a towering shot over the right center wall as Kaitlin Cochran hit her ninth home run of the season, upping ASU, 2-1.

The Beavers weren't done though as Cambria Miranda came through again for OSU in the third with a solo home run over left field to tie up the score at two apiece. The game stayed quiet until extra innings when Kaitlin Cochran came up in the eighth inning to crush a walk-off solo shot over center field to push ASU up 3-2. The Beavers were unable to answer though as Burkhart struck out two with the last OSU out popping out to second to end the game.

The Sun Devils will wrap up their weekend tomorrow as they face off against the Beavers again in with a 1 p.m. start time.
