TEMPE, Ariz. - The 2006 Baldy Castillo Invitational came to a close Saturday night on Joe Selleh Track at Sun Angel Stadium with the men's sprinters shining brightly to help the Arizona State University track and field program to wins in 11 of the 36 contested events and nine regional qualifying marks. In all, the men were victorious in five of the seven sprinting events while posting four of the programs nine regionals.
Domenik Peterson had a strong day as he not only won the 100m dash (10.47) and was a part of the victorious 4x100m and 4x400m relays, all three marks would be good enough for regional qualification. He joined Steven Koehnemann, Kelvin Love, Jr., and Jimmie Gordon on the short relay to run 39.96 while he and Gordon combined with Jerry Jones and Chris Adams to win the longer relay in 3:06.82. Love Jr. won the 200m dash in a regional time of 21.08 while Jones took the gold in the 400m dash at 47.32.
Also victorious for the men were Velibor Radejovic in the 3,00m run at 8:18.26. Brandon Glenn took top billing in the pole vault with a winning clearance of 4.88m (16-00.00) while Ryan Zimmerman, who earned indoor All-America honors last week in the triple jump, took first in the long jump with a mark of 6.89m (22-7.25). Andrew Smith was the final men's regional qualifier as he tossed the javelin 64.90m (212-11) to claim the final win on the men's side.
On the women's side, Jacquelyn Johnson, fresh off winning the indoor pentathlon national title one week ago, continued her winning ways as she crossed the line in the 100m hurdles at 13.67, which also is a regional qualifying mark. Corey Randall won the 1,500m run in 4:35.98 while the 4x400m relay of Christina Hardeman, D'Metra Macedon, Bridgette Williams and Shauntel Elcock were victorious in 3:45.98.
In the pole vault, both Cara Walker and April Kubishta cleared 3.80m (12-05.50) to tie for second place in the event while also meeting the regional qualifying standard. The mark for Kubishta is the third-highest in school history with Walker's mark of 3.81m (12-05-.75) last season being second on the list.
Several members of the team will travel to Tucson next week as they participate in the Arizona Wildcat Multis while the remainder of the squad plays host to the ASU Invitational Friday and Saturday at Sun Angel Stadium.
