Andrew Wins 50-Meter Backstroke At World Cup Series

TEMPE, Ariz. (www.thesundevils.com) -- In her first international meet, Arizona State University sophomore Caitlin Andrew (San Antonio, Texas) made it to the finals in six events and medaled in three at the FINA Swimming World Cup Series held in East Meadow, N.Y., Feb. 3-4. At the World Cup Series, Andrew was the third-highest American woman in the medal count.

On the first day of competition, Andrew made it to the finals in three events including the 50-meter backstroke, 100-meter butterfly and the 50-meter freestyle. In the 50-meter backstroke, Andrew touched the wall in 27.84 to capture the title. Andrew finished the 100-meter butterfly in fifth place with a time of 59.27. In the 50-meter freestyle, Andrew finished sixth with a time of 25.36.

Andrew swam well on the second day of competition as well, medaling in two events. She finished second in the 100-meter backstroke recording a time of 1:00.25 and third in the 50-meter butterfly with a time of 26.49. In the 50-meter fly, Andrew was the top American finisher in a very strong field of swimmers. Andrew also competed in the finals in the 100-meter individual medley finishing in fifth place with a time of 1:02.75.

In 2005, Andrew won the Pac-10 championship in the 100-yard butterfly becoming the first Sun Devil to win a butterfly event at the league meet. Andrew also earned four All-America honors in 2005, including three in relay events. Andrew currently holds school records in the 100-yard freestyle, 100-yard backstroke and the 100-yard butterfly. She also holds the schools second-fastest time in the 50-yard freestyle and the 200-yard backstroke.

According to collegeswimming.com, Andrew has the second-fastest time in the country in the 100-yard butterfly, third fastest in 100-yard backstroke and sixth-fastest time in the 100-yard freestyle.

Andrew and the Sun Devils (No. 23 men) will finish their regular season hosting intrastate rival Arizona (No. 7 men, No. 6 women) Saturday Feb. 11, at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center with competition beginning at 1 p.m. MST.
