LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The first day of competition at the 2005 Pac-10 Conference Multi-Event Championships came to a close for two members of the Arizona State University track and field team Saturday with both in striking distance of scoring for the team in the meet being held at Drake Stadium on the campus of UCLA. The women's heptathlon and men's decathlon are the first two events being contested as part of the 2005 Pac-10 Track & Field Championships.
Freshman Alana Waterford, competing in just her second heptathlon, accumulated 2,558 points and sits 10th in the 11-athlete field while Ryan Ehler stands eighth among nine competitors in the decathlon with 3,015 points. A pair of Washington State Cougars are leading the way with Diana Pickler (3,393 points) and Darion Powell (3,889 points) holding top honors following day one.
Waterford competed in four events on the day and opened the meet with a personal-best time of 15.71 in the 100m hurdles for 750 points. From there, she tied for eighth in the high jump with a clearance of 1.60m (5-3.00), took 11th in the shot put with a heave of 8.72m (28-07.50) for 446 points and rounded out the day with a 10th-place showing in the 200m dash with a time of 28.06 (626 points). Overall, Waterford bettered her previous 100m hurdles mark of 15.73 while tying her top 200m showing of 27.88.
Ehler opened the day with a third-place finish in the 100m dash at 11.31 for 793 points before jumping 5.83m (19-1.50) in the long jump for 550 points and a ninth-place finish. He then took fourth place in the shot put as he bettered his personal best throw by over one meter at 13.06m (42-10.25) for 671 points. In the high jump, Ehler tied for ninth with a top clearance of 1.80m (5-10.75) to pick up 627 points while his 1:01.19 in the 400m dash placed him eighth for 374 points.
The multi-event meet concludes Sunday with the women competing in three events and the men in five. Next week, the Sun Devils will travel to UCLA for the 2005 Pac-10 Championships.
