TEMPE, Ariz. - Five members of the Arizona State University track and field team earned conference honors this week, the Pac-10 office announced Tuesday. Freshman thrower Jessica Pressley was selected as the Female Field Athlete of the Week while the men's 4x100m relay of Steven Koehnemann, Domenik Peterson, Seth Amoo and Kelvin Love shared the Male Track Athlete of the Week honor with Stanford's Ian Dobson.
Pressley has put together a solid rookie campaign outdoors this year and was honored this week after setting the school record in the women's hammer throw for the third time this season and shattering the meet record for the Double Dual. Her throw of 63.51m (208-04) betters her previous best of 62.52m (205-01) made her the only Sun Devil to surpass the 200-foot mark in the event. She currently stands second in the Pac-10 and sixth overall in the national standings one week prior to the conference meet (May 14-15).
The relay team won the annual Double Dual with Arizona and Northern Arizona Saturday in Tempe with a school record time of 38.71. The mark, which also stands as the fifth-fastest in the history of the Pac-10, also is the fifth-fastest in the world this season and tops among collegiate teams. Prior to the race, the school record was 38.78 and was set by the quartet of Ron Brown, LaMonte King, Greg Moore and Dwayne Evans during the 1979 season, 26 years prior to last weekend's run.
Sharing the weekly honor on the track for the men is Dobson of Stanford, who clocked the fastest 10,000m time by an American this season at 27:59.72. He is just the fifth Pac-10 runner to break the 28-minute mark. The other recipients of Pac-10 honors this week were Jesse Williams of USC, the Men's Field Athlete of the Week in the high jump, and Monique Henderson of UCLA, the Women's Track Athlete of the Week in the sprints.
Pressley (third) and the relay (fourth) bring the Sun Devils' season total to four honors from the conference and marks the second week in a row an ASU student-athlete has been selected. Last week, Aaron Aguayo was selected for the male track honor while Trevell Quinley (April 11) secured the team's first honor of the season with his American-leading long jump. Peterson collected his second athlete of the week honor in his career as he secured a weekly honor last season in the 200m dash.
Several members of the team will travel to UCLA this weekend to open the championship season as they are set to compete in the Pac-10 Multi-Event Championships, May 7-8, at Drake Stadium. One week later, the remainder of the team will head to UCLA to compete in the Pac-10 Championships, May 14-15.
