Saving its best round for the final day, the Arizona State University women's golf team finished in a tie for eighth place at the 2005 NCAA Championships, held May 17-20 at the par 71, 6,312-yard Meadows Course at the Sunriver Resort.
The only team in the tournament to improve each day in the rainy and cold conditions that prevailed all week, the Sun Devils shot a five-over 289 in Friday's final round and tied for eighth with Oklahoma State with a four-day total of 54-over 1190. It marked the 17th all-time top 10 national finish for ASU and the team's second in as many years under the direction of third-year head coach Melissa Luellen (10th last season).
Duke won the NCAA team title with a four-day total of 34-over 1170, capturing the team's first NCAA championship since 2002. UCLA finished second, five strokes behind at 39-over 1175, while Auburn (1176), Pepperdine (1179) and California (1180) rounded out the top five.
Senior Erin Tone ended her career with her best NCAA finish, tying for 12th at nine-over 293 (75-73-72-73). She carded a two-over 73 in Friday to turn in her fourth top 20 showing of the season. Freshman Louise Stahle climbed 27 spots from a tie for 43rd to finish in a tie for 16th after carding a one-under 70 in the final round. The 2005 Pac-10 Player and Newcomer of the Year ended up with a four-day total of 12-over 296 (75-77-74-70).
Sophomore Tiffany Tavee also turned in her best round of the tournament on Friday, carding an even-par 71 to finish in a tie for 27th at 13-over 297 (75-75-76-71). Rounding out the Sun Devil lineup were Charmaine Erasmus who tied for 78th (80-76-75-75=306) and junior Alissa Kuczka who finished in a tie for 110th (78-79-77-79=313).
Duke's Anna Grzebien captured the individual NCAA title, shooting a two-over 73 on Friday with a four-round total of two-over 286 (73-75-65-73)
